The first time I watched Hot Fuzz the power went out during this scene (and didn't come back on till the morning), which really added to the "suddenly horror" vibes

Haha that's exactly it, I went back a bit to check I hadn't just missed something super obvious somehow. But no, the book just does an amazing job of having all the information there but never giving you reason to look for it

Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham
- Play by play of the disaster, what lead up to it and what happened after. Fascinating and horrifying in equal measure

Currawan by Bronwyn Alcock
- Tales from the 2019/2020 bushfires in NSW, Australia. Some absolutely haunting passages

Nonfiction:
Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond
- Why are some countries powerful while others are not? A dive into why some areas of the world got running start to civilisation

Islands of Abandonment by Cal Flynn
- What happens to places humans leave, and why are they abandoned at all?

The Murderbot series by Martha Wells
- How do you be a person when you aren't one? And maybe don't want to be one either?

Station Eleven & Last Night in Montreal by Emily St John Mandel

Other faves include:

The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling
- The religion in it is fascinating even before it all goes horribly wrong

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones
- I love the take on vampires, where remaining yourself means having to eat your own kin

My brother was so confused when I said I was learning some (very basic) coding. Like maybe AI will be able to do it competently before I can, but the point is to give my brain a new little challenge. Everything else is a bonus
