I know we on the project volunteered to keep our identities off the individual stories but it's been a year and also things have only gotten worse so let me tell you

Writing this comic last year and having every single god damn thing come to pass at this point is just

Fuck, man. I'm so tired.
Panel 1

A white woman with a white tank top and pink hair leans into frame, her elbow over the lower panel border, waving to the reader.

LUCY:

Hi. I’m Lucy. That’s not my real name, and this isn’t what I look like. But that’s fine, because while this is my story…

LUCY:

It’s one that thousands of other trans people have lived through, at least a little bit. It’s our story too.

Panel 2

A map of the United States. States colored in red are those with anti-trans laws on the books. Those states are: New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

LUCY:

I’m here to tell you how nightmarish Project 2025 will be for trans lives. Before we get to the main event, let me set the stage.

LUCY:

I’ve been out and medically transitioning as a trans woman for several years. It costs me thousands of dollars in medical expenses each year.

LUCY:

Also had to flee my home state due to bigoted laws, and faced discrimination everywhere from my own family to my job.

Panel 3

Lucy holds up up a giant textbook-sized printed copy of Project 2025. Her expression is one of outrage.

LUCY:

It’s pretty bad. And if Trump gets reelected and Project 2025 is brought into action, it’s only going to get much worse.

LUCY:

“Transgender,” “Gender Identity” and “Biological Sex” are used over thirty times in this Phone Book of Hate, so I’m going to keep it simple.

LUCY:

Three policies. Just three. That’s all they need.

Panel 4

Lucy sits at a computer, typing away. She looks over her shoulder at the reader.

LUCY:

Let’s start at the top. Page five. “Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology.”

LUCY:

Any trans person’s story would be labeled as pornography. Our lives. Our experiences. Every part of us.

LUCY:

Immediately f… Panel 1

Lucy sits on a cot in a prison, hugging herself in despair.

LUCY:

That means that any trans person talking about their transition could be imprisoned. Every statement about our lives, a potential offense.

LUCY:

Hell, the story you’re reading right now would qualify.

Panel 2

Lucy stands behind a counter with a cash register in front of her, ready to scan a bag of chips on the conveyer belt. She looks annoyed and exhausted.

LUCY:

Next. “Rescind regulations prohibiting discrimination on the basis of […] gender identity, transgender status, and sex characteristics.” Page 584.

LUCY:

Paired with page 495, “a general statement of policy specifying that it will not enforce any prohibition on […] gender identity discrimination” it paints a picture.

LUCY:

Discrimination towards trans people at places like their jobs will be fully legal, leaving us open to unmitigated harassment and hate.

Panel 3

Lucy is curled up in a ball, looking small, looking like she’s just finished crying her eyes out and is just empty.

LUCY:

Page 485. “Withdraw all guidance encouraging Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program service providers to provide controversial “gender transition” procedures or “gender-affirming care”.

LUCY:

Page 462. “Fund studies into the short-term and long-term negative effects of crosssex interventions, including “affirmation,” puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries.”

LUCY:

Page…take your pick. There’s a dozen more.

Panel 4

Lucy, still running on empty, holds a vial of Estradiol in her fingers and stares at it. It’s nearly empty.

LUCY:

By cutting federal funding from any medical facility that offers trans healthcare, and standing against it as official policy…

LUCY:

Hormones and gender care will become almost impossible to find. For those of us who are already on them, it’ll wreak havoc.

LUCY:

Our mental health. Our bodies. Damage that will ruin lives. And for trans folks who can no longer produce a safe level of hormones…

Panel 5

Lucy …

Introducing the Scerere! Another in a long line of intelligent alien species I'll be posting about

The Scerere are another intelligent alien species to inhabit the region of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm known as Ruminaaan Space. Historically speaking, the Scerere are quite noteworthy, being that they, as well as a buoyant balloon-like species known as the Boueue, are the first two sophont civilizations in Ruminaaan Space to have ever contacted each other in the flesh. When they met several thousand years ago, they formed an alliance called the Syndicate of Civilized Worlds (SCW), a meeting so important that many calendars are based around the date. This alliance, which formed after nearly a whole millennium of foreplay performed between message-carrying probes, stood as a testament to the strength, prosperity and security that came from embracing the unknown rather than fearing it. With time, only more species would join the SCW, but over thousands of years just as many empires rooted, and on numerous occasions even had to fight for, their autonomy and independence from this very faction.

Looking at them biologically, the Scerere are even more interesting, bordering on bizarre. Though one may not think upon a first glance, this sophont species have evolved directly from plants, just like the other "animal"-like organisms of their native biosphere, which just goes to show the unpredictability of patterns in life throughout the universe.

They do not have ears, but are able to "hear" through vibrations which they pick up through their feet - this, as well as the physical movement of their limbs, are the means through which the Scerere communicate with one another. Although they are able to detect light and basic movement with their eyes, their vision isn't nearly as strong or detailed compared to humans - a feature not uncommon for life on their homeworld as complex visual organs have scarcely emerged in most evolutionary lineages.

I’ve never forgotten this picture from 2016 and how it completely reshaped my understanding of how the media covers protests.

But if a few people in masks start lighting stuff on fire? Then you have news. This creates an *enormous* attentional advantage towards the most violent and chaotic kind of protest.

Hey, another sophont done! Apologies this one took so long.

These are the Cri, a large aerial intelligent alien. Learn about them in greater detail in the alt text
#specbio #worldbuilding #ruminaaantheomachy #alienpersonspecbio #scifi #specevo #alienpersonworldbuilding #aliens #speculativebiology
The Cri are another sophont species native to Ruminaaan Space. They come from a moon called Rrhu, which has the lowest gravity of any other sophont's homeworld (about 49% that of Earth). Despite the very lax restrictions caused by the gravity, they are very average in size compared to other lifeforms on their world, with a 15.5 meter wingspan which is dwarfed by some animals they evolved alongside. Although hidden in the picture, they possess articulated foldable fingers as well as a retractable pseudo-jaw on the underside of their heads with which they use to manipulate objects. In prehistory, they would ambush prey mid-air using floating forests of balloon-like "trees" as cover.

Due to their aerial nature, they have never developed a concept of strict political borders, thus streamlining their progression towards a spacefaring society - the desire to do so in no small part being propogated by their aerial instincts. Despite this, their history is by no means a perfect, linear timeline of progress.

They've been spacefaring for over 5,000 years, and for a large period their interstellar colonies would begin to lose contact due to the vast distances between them making it hard to maintain steady flow of resources, communication and diplomatic stability. The fact some members of the Cri would begin evolving into genetically-distinct subspecies did not aid this era of disconnect. Hundreds of worlds would suffer, some reverting to hunter gatherer lifestyles or even extinction. Luckily, the passage of time was their greatest ally, with the majority of these colonies rejoining eventually - however, there are still many stray isolated populations of Cri scattered across space who do not acknowledge their history.

Yet another design made for a contest for Callum Diggle's comic Humanity Lost. Although these designs didn't win, I get to include them in my own project! These are the Fulnera, a now-extinct sophont species of alien. Check alt text for more info
#specbio #speculativebiology #myart #xenobiology
The Fulnera - in their larval stage, they appear like motile fish. They sport tadpole-like tails and a long snout from which their sensory organs and manipulatory appendages emerge. It is these juveniles who once built up their infrastructure and carried out all the active roles in their bygone civilization, alongside tending to the mature adults who dot the landscape of the coasts like trees. The Fulnera - after undergoing metamorphosis, they sprout like plants with a latticed membrane encasing their bodies from which they passively filter feed. Their faces also become leaf-like structures they use to photosynthesise with, and their tall bodies towered out of the water to gain better access to the sun as well as be able to disperse their sperm better.
