A kinda related story: My grandfather played the lotto every week and the morning after a draw he and his buds would go to the convenience store where they bought tickets and check their numbers together over coffee. Then word came that someone had bought the winning ticket from that store. 1/

If you have an inkling you might win a Nobel prize, do you feel some urge to ensure you’re in a really noteworthy inaccessible place when it’s announced so you’ve got a good story about getting the news. ‘So, it was as our submersible rose from the Mariana Trench when my phone started pinging…’

ADF once again attacks the studies as having biased sampling. There isn't a single study affirming LGBTQ people's experiences that the right wouldn't attack, because they KNOW the "perfect randomized study" they demand that tests *obviously* harmful effects could never ethically be conducted.

Colorado's lawyer lays out how ludicrous it would be to try to do some kind of randomized study ON CHILDREN to prove conversion therapy is harmful. We already know enough to know that there's no way such research could be performed ethically, and we know plenty enough without it.

Also some of the background navy service personnel seem to be clapping plenty about no longer being ”politically correct” at other parts of the speech so 🙃

Anyway, someone more electronically adept please post the contextual clip, you can find it here: www.instagram.com/reel/DPcSIPb...

It plays into authoritarian messaging when we post military brass clapping for pay raises (even if they should refrain from doing so) and implicate that they are clapping for the extermination of political opposition.
thedanahoward.bsky.social
But *also* people have to be careful about reposting this clip out of context. Authoritarians *want* you to believe that the military backs them up.

note that the cadets were clapping in response to what he said JUST before this clip. I was curious what that was and looked it up, turns out he had just said he supports an across the board pay raise for military. that is what they were clapping about. And then he pivots to this.
thedanahoward.bsky.social
That being said, military should not be politicized and that is why navy cadets should refrain from clapping in the background regardless of what is said.

One of the loudest bells tolling for social science right now is that the decade of abundant data on humans is coming to a close. Whether you work on digital trace or surveys, LLM pollution is a serious problem, even while the wide roll out of LLMs creates an urgent need for social science.

A lot of psych is already conducted with online convenience samples & ppl are probably excited about silicon samples bc it would allow them to crank out more studies for even less 💸

How about we reconsider the idea that sciencey science involves collecting own data.

This is true. In AI mode no reponses to question "Does Trump show signs of dementia" but long analysis if you ask "Does Biden show signs of dementia"

So whole AI thing is now Orwell-level of corruption and monopoly abuse just three years into its public explosive introduction.
