Not mentioned as often, and often ignored, is that Mr. Smith’s father was a newspaper editor who took on a corrupt mining interest and was murdered for it. Shot in the back at his desk with his hat on.

Only thing that saves the day in the end is a corrupt senator, so moved by Smith’s idealism and courage, that he admits he’s corrupt. Kind of a flimsy thing to hang a happy ending on, but I’ll take it.
