I tried to share this latest chapter on my work, and in between me previewing the draft and posting it, my content warnings list had been raptured.

I once wrote fanfic for a gift exchange prompt back in 2016 that took place in Renaissance Italy. I’ve always had a special interest in world history, so I liked the prompt.
It was my introduction into how egregious sodomy laws were, and I also ended up learning a lot about the Spanish Inquisition.

I personally value inner beauty more than outer, which to me makes a person beautiful as a whole. So, a lot of my characters also feel the same way about loved ones and the people around them.

Lucian and Auðunar are trying to be intimate for the first time, but Lucian is nervous because of past trauma. Auðunar takes care to check in and make sure he’s okay.
(That one phrase is in bold bc it’s a rough draft quick hand for me that it’s being said in another language)

As I watched, my heart raced. Nerves were cropping up, for I had never done this with anyone else other than Tobias. My mind threatened to replace this moment in time with that horrible night again, and I did not want that to happen. I was safe, safe on this bed. I was safe underneath Auðunar. I needed to prove that to my mind once and for all.

“Lucian?” Auðunar must have noticed a change right away. “Are we still alright?”

I nodded. “I’m just nervous. I…” I sighed. “I know you won’t hurt me. I just need to hear that from you right now.”

His gaze softened, and his cleaner hand held my face. “I will take care of you,” he assured me at a whisper. “You are the light of my life, Lucian.” He leaned down to kiss my brow. “I love you.”

I released a shaky breath as I smiled. “I love you.” I kissed his lips.

“I will keep you safe,” he then said. “No harm will come to you.”

I nodded, and my smile had not once wavered. “I trust you, Auðunar.”

Declan’s trying his best to find a cure for a necromancy spell that is slowly killing his partner, Mícheil. even going so far as trying divine magic, of all things.
In the process, he’s unknowingly been distancing himself.

“I miss you,” he whispered as I tended to him.

“I’ve been here this whole time, love,” I chuckled.

He shook his head. “You’ve been my caretaker. My healer. I miss you. My partner, my lover, the father of my child. I want him back.”

“I’m doing what I can,” I insisted. “Soon enough, things will be back to the way they were.”

Mícheil leaned up a bit. “Can you kiss me before you start praying?”

“Of course, love.” Grinning, I met him halfway with a softer kiss on the lips. I felt his mouth tremble against mine as he let out a weak hum. It brought tears to my eyes, and I gave him another kiss to help soothe him.

He was right. How long had it been since I wasn’t just a healer to him? I wasn’t even a good healer.

When I parted, it was only so that Mícheil could breathe. “Better, love?”

He nodded with a grin. “I almost felt human for a second.”

Declan's trying to turn his back on necromancy so that he can save his partner from the effects of a lethal spell. He hopes to be mentored by a healer that can commune with the gods.

I listened to the two of them—Branwyn chatting using what little words she knew, and Mícheil eating it all up—as I reached my decision. Our camp was being stored up into the cart, piece by piece, and I crossed paths with Jorund in the process.

“What does it really take to learn divine magic?” I asked.

The Northman glanced over. “You sure do know how to start a conversation,” he chuckled. “You are looking to lean?”

“I want to try,” I clarified. “Using this death magic isn’t sustainable. And it’s hurting the both of us in the process. Something needs to change.”

He hummed in thought. “Well, you had just completed the first step: wanting to learn.”

I rolled my eyes. “You make it sound like it’s easy.”

“It is easy to start,” he said, “but difficult to maintain. I will sit in the front with you today.”

I sighed, hauling myself up to the seat. Alasdair was ready with driving the wagon, as well, Colonel Druiminn right beside him. I looked at the tarp, knowing that my family was resting in there.

God, this is from the SUPER ROUGH draft of my latest WIP in the series. But I like this bit.
The dialogue in bold is a quickhand for me that it's being spoken in a different language. And the bracketed translations are quickhand for a similar reason.
Also, Auðunar POV 👀

“We have less of a chance at shelter in town once the gates close at dusk,” I reminded them swiftly. “They have every right to be cautious. Besides, our food supply is low. We are due for another hunting party. Who shall volunteer?”

Sigmund’s hand shot up. “I’ll aim for stags.”

“Very well. But make sure to aim for smaller just in case.” I watched as Lucian lowered his cowl once more. “Lucian? Would you like to join him?”

He glanced over. His quiver was still at his back, and he was just about to slide it down. “Oh, but I did not do so well last time.”

“Archery is a skill that must be practiced.” I took a light hold of his arm. “Otherwise, you will never improve. Besides, you may surprise yourself.”

He glanced down at his bow, squinting in thought. “Very well.” He gave me a smile. “I will take Brya.”

“Good idea.” I kissed him. “And remember. Patience is a virtue, and it is a necessary skill when it comes to hunting.”

He nodded with a smile. “Wish me luck.”

I could not help but give him another kiss, dreading even a moment apart. “Ulfgír sé með Þér.” [Ulfgír be with you.]
