The White House press corps is best understood as a hungry school of piranhas in which each individual would just as soon turn the others in a Darwinian competition to get the next the next question in and advance their own career aspirations.

"Donald Trump is in hell. If only we weren’t trapped there with him." Such a great encapsulation, not just of the Kennedy Center Honors but [gestures broadly] all of this.

This guy is from my neck of the woods and because I teach history, I do know who he is. That said even 99% of Utahns probably have never heard of him, much less the argument he's a founder of the modern west. I totally gotta read this book!

I've changed my mind about participation trophies. Clearly this man did not get enough growing up. Parents: if you don't want your kid to grow up with a psychopathic need for recognition, give all the trophies you can now, while they're young and it's harmless.

Yeah, don't get me started on coaches. Like you said, no shade, but I've lost so many job opportunities because I don't coach anything. Meanwhile the coaches that get hired to teach history teach historical *content* instead of historical *thinking*.

In my mind, the real revolution was what took place in the hearts and minds of Americans to justify their separation and to create a singular republic after it.

Yeah. I generally like anything Burns does, and he definitely has a knack for making history accessible to the general public but I thought that overall it spent too much time on battles, and not enough time on the events preceding and succeeding the fighting. /1
