In New York, rail and local transit have been under the same roof for 57 years, yet the MTA is still the ONLY mainline rail operator in the country that doesn't offer rail riders free/discounted transfers to local transit they operate! And there has never been any real effort to coordinate the two.

I've taken 5 subway rides since Monday. The OMNY fare cap tracker is only showing that I've taken four, and my ride history is only showing I've taken two. This system is beyond useless.

Oh cool, my OMNY fare cap window changed from a Tuesday start to a Monday start with no explanation.

But it is mobile ticketing that is causing fare collection failures!!

MONEY TRAIN TO THE GAME: "The MTA would have to spend at least $3 million in contracted union fees to provide the same special game-day service to Citi Field as Metro-North gives Yankee fans to go to the House that Ruth Built, data obtained by Streetsblog shows." nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/10/08/m...
MONEY TRAIN: How LIRR Unions 'Game' The System - Streetsblog New York City
An old work rule means that the MTA would have to pay millions of dollars just to provide a little extra service after special events like Mets games or the Ryder Cup.

Like some of the other work rules, there are workarounds they don't bother to try. All of these events are planned in advance, so they can write the extra trains into the crew book assignments like they do with the Holdiay Eve and seasonal trains, but then it'll impact OTP & they care more abt that
thelirrtoday.com
Most of these runs are pulled off the extra list, which doesn't cost anything extra. Which is probably the same that Metro-North is doing...it's unlikely they are running extra round-trips to Poughkeepsie or New Haven on OT.

Would be cool if we got some more reporting on the actual issues at hand in the budget instead of flavors of "[Government service] shutdown during the government shutdown" four times a day.

There are 100% real MTA customer service phone representatives out there telling people that OMNY doesn't work with Visa or Amex, so there is certainly a large cloud of both unofficial and official misinformation out there...

I don't get the framing of the story like this...if they could pin $18k in tolls on the guy obviously the socks on the plate didn't work.

They do things like this at WTC all the time and it works out fine.

"Oh no, we can't have any seats in the main concourse lest it mess up circulation"... but a piano is okay.

I'm not bitter.

Metro-North has solo conductor trains, LIRR did too on the North Fork until about 10 years ago
thelirrtoday.com
With the main stations having fare gates, you could likely get away with just the conductor and the fare gates. The gates would catch most people on one end of the trip (either with a proper ticket or the higher exit fare) and if they miss some intermediate travelers it's not the end of the world.

But one of those sides has many billions in subsidies from the NY taxpayer to run good service and one doesn't.

The NYS VTL says vehicles with 15 or more seats can use bus lanes, though NYC's traffic regulations says "buses" without a super clear definition.

I don't know how MTA can seriously think OMNY is ready to be the sole payment method for NYCT when its customer service agents are telling people it doesn't work with the largest credit card network on Earth!
thelirrtoday.com
The disastrous OMNY rollout has been made avoidably worse by @mta.info's "customer service"

People MTA have running the phones are tremendously incompetent, and 5.5 yrs since launch we still get stories like this every 1-2 wks

Last yr took me 2 wks/2+ hrs on phone to resolve simple free xfer issue
