In the end, the main goal of it ends up lost:
1. new name is not honoured by Population Or used
2. old name continues to be used over the English translation (Riverview) which is not geographically very specific and comes across as bland corporate speak
3. People get further pushy against renaming

They want to say “look here’s this name & an easy but bland English translation so you never have to use FN name! Now pat us on the back for reconciliation!”

The modern world needs to be able to speak a word into your car map while driving & be given a map of the place. That’s how many interact with things & names won’t gain widespread use unless that’s a possibility.

Long story short:
Govt has a responsibility to educate people they aren’t fulfilling

…will likely just be calling it “Patullo” (and mispronouncing that, let’s be honest) for the next 30 years because they feel too intimidated to be comfortable mispronouncing & attempting traditional names

Lack of public Ed doesn’t help, nor does saying “cutting and pasting is good” (it isn’t)

I never said I wanted things named after Euro places. In fact I find the English translation of the name Riverview to be confusing (there is already a roadway section with that name in the lower mainland).

ie is spelling it Stallohwassen offensive? From my view it seems more people would use the new name if it were spelled more accessibly

I’m interested in perspective on Anglicized spelling. If you had any you want to share … Is there a reason why we used to spell things in anglicized spelling & also FN phonetic spelling systems (such as is done on the Sea to Sky) but that seems not in vogue any longer?

However the problem is I am unable to type the name into places such as Google Maps (similar to the problem with the renamed Colony Farms Park)… as such I end up using the English name as I can’t type the other one.

My biggest problem with the new name is the English version of the name. Riverview is already a geographic traffic hotspot in the lower mainland (on Lougheed Hwy, the hospital) & I think that is a bit confusing. Would much rather call the bridge by the First Nations name
