To clarify: there is a setting in Signal to automatically delete messages after a certain amount of time in a conversation AFTER BEING OPENED
It’s a really really cool feature and I highly suggest turning it on

I had a nightmare. At the end I became aware, and every time I tried to exert control on something my brain would make it disappear. Including people. By the end I was all alone and could feel my brain taking control back over the dream and making me forget I was in one. I had to wake up right then
