I think a lot of it happens when you have your plot planned out but when you go to actually write it, you realize your character wouldn't say/do the thing you planned in the way you planned it, so you realize you need to make a change. Because it's character based, it usually works out for the best.

Good morning Womble! Finally wrapping up the great Joan D. Vinge's Snow Queen/Tiamat cycle with Tangled Up In Blue this week. Also just read Star Wars: Dark Empire II (Legends canon) for the first time, not my favorite.
