Not tearing down your post here but pointing out that people can move countries and be resident in one and a citizen of another. I don't know that's the case here. But it is possible.

I was a UK citizen living in the US for ages and would address posts to "my American friends" not my UK ones.

Honestly, laptops are so cheap right now. I just picked up a Lenovo yoga ultra 7 with 32 gigs of ram for $1300 and it blazes with Linux. If I'd been happy with an Ulta 5 and 16 high ( which is still awesome) would have been $995.

Agreed. I did not enjoy that movie.

I got a "please verify your age" popup on bluesky and I literally said: "huh", clicked on proton VPN and selected "NZ" and hit reload in bluesky and the popup went away and I haven't thought about it since.

It's was really really hard. ;)

Why can't I have a terror react?
December 13, 2025 at 2:02 AM
I am UNREASONABLY EXCITED.

That does depend a little on the room size. I have to be careful in mine because it's longer than a wavelength of what the sub kicks out so I can get muting if I'm not careful. Muddy ick.

If you wanna go down the rabbit hole of hifi check out cheapaudioman on YouTube and join his monthly zooms. Soooo many audiophile nerds with opinions. I learned more in 2 sessions there than I did in a year. (The loudness nob on your amp is your friend)
December 10, 2025 at 9:15 AM
I place my speakers about 0.6 of a meter from the back and side walls but it really depends on your rooms acoustics. Make that happy triangle with your listening point at the peak and if you close your eyes and it sounds like Taylor is in the room with you, you've nailed it.
December 10, 2025 at 9:13 AM
I personally keep my subwoofer inside the pair of speakers. I find if it's the the outside of the pair it screws up the soundstage.

What are you using to hook the sub in? Optical? Line? Also are you pre cutting out the higher frequencies or letting your sub do that? Pre filtering is usually better

I prefer the Wharfedale diamonds personally. They feel like they have more personality.

Also with such a small room I'd aim for a non vented bass (like an SVS SB-1000.) But I suspect if I keep talking my tism will show so it'll shut up now.
December 10, 2025 at 7:23 AM
Ditto. It's just absurd.
December 10, 2025 at 2:30 AM
And I know I sound a bit "well actually..." Here.

But if people feel this way about it why aren't we all baseball batting all the gov cameras in the street? (Which i also sympathise with)
December 7, 2025 at 1:13 AM
I mean... I get it. And I sympathise. But also. Legally in both NZ and America you don't have to give consent to be photographed in a public setting right? So while it's rude. One has no expectation or right to not be filmed or recorded in public. As long as it's not obscene (upskirts etc)

I like the numbers. And am 100% green tech but I do hope we work on cleaner ways of mining some of those heavy metals. The purification process on some of those is pretty nasty compared to just digging up some of the others.

My only one tiny niggle as a avid green tech supporter.

I use BYD battery banks. Modular and expandable. Love them. About $1k per kWh to add new units. (In blocks of 3kwh)
December 7, 2025 at 12:55 AM
Nah, AUD. But power is way more expensive as a percent of total household costs. So even tho our dollar is weaker than yours. We pay more in power.

Plus Iive in one of the peak sunshine hours places on the planet. Which helps lots.
December 6, 2025 at 11:50 AM
Dunno where you live buy my entire system (11kw solar plus a battery) cost me $15k. And with power bills being an average of $400+ every two months it took about 6 years to pay mine off.

And I already was frugal with the power. The average place it would be faster.
December 6, 2025 at 6:52 AM
I have an 11kw system and a huge battery. I haven't paid for coal fired power in years.

My EV runs on the sun and a (still regrettable) number of precious metals. But they are working on that second part.

And recycling exists.

Haha last night I came across a word I wasn't 100% sure of in my physical book and I pressed my finger to the word and was momentarily confused why the definition didn't pop up. (I usually read on kindle) And I'm 50!

"This didn't happen in the ancestral environment?!"
December 5, 2025 at 2:39 AM
That's fair. I've personally met more people harmed than helped but as you say, anecdotal, and would make a fascinating study.

However personally, knowing human psych the way I do I'm leaning more towards the harm side. Even when they think it's helping. See virtual girlfriends.
December 5, 2025 at 2:08 AM
I know at least one person who was Nearly talked INTO suicide by LLMs. And had to seek help for AI psychosis. So I suspect it's doing more harm than good.
