Great piece, but one question: "...a print struck directly from the original camera negative..." What does "original camera negative" mean in 2025 when, I assume, every frame has been digitally color corrected and VFX-cleaned up for stuff like stunt crash mats and facial prosthetics?

Yes to all of this + anyone who's a fan of CARNIVAL, Lynch, Romero, and Bergman and hasn't yet seen MESSIAH OF EVIL would be wise to bump it to the top of their list.
A still from MESSIAH OF EVIL showing the view through an opaque glass and iron skylight through which scary silhouettes and shadows of figures can be seen, their hands pressed up against the translucent glass.

MISSING MOVIES MONDAY! We need your help finding Eli Cohen's powerful 1991 drama #TheQuarrel! It features brilliant performances by Saul Rubinek & R.H. Thomson as two Holocaust survivors arguing over faith & God. Where is this award-winning film? #LostFilm #FilmTwitter

You’re not the Pope of TV, don’t try to dictate your orthodoxy to the rest of us! 😂
theredlitz.bsky.social
Respectfully, this is not only mindless gatekeeping, it’s factually wrong.

When this was on HBO, before streaming or DVDs, the vast majority of viewers started on an episode OTHER than 101. That’s how TV used to work! Your buddy would tell you about a great show and you’d jump in the next week.

Is it better if you know all the layers and history?

Sure. But the point is to find themselves right door for you, which isn’t always the front door.

Get into a great show any way you can, and then go back to the start for the full experience. Especially on great TV that is endlessly rewatchable.
theredlitz.bsky.social
Nah. Sometimes the right entry point for someone isn’t episodes 1. Most shows take some time to find themselves and their tone.

Someone who watches, say, episodes 301-303 and is hooked might then have the right motivation to go back to 101 and watch the full story.

FWIW, I love both yet couldn’t get into Breaking Bad!

The Sopranos isn’t really a crime drama. It’s a family drama tied to a workplace dramady, with occasional brutality.

If you’re curious about The Wire, maybe just try starting with season 4, the one focusing on the school system and that gave us Michael B Jordan.

I wrote about why the regrettable conclusions of Ezra Klein pissed me off so badly in the last couple weeks.

On moral cowardice in an era that calls for clarity, and a popular political instinct to try to solve divisions of abuse by ignoring causes. www.the-reframe.com/eventually-y...

Try to make sure you’re not replaced by a new John in season 2.

Find the reel the FX team did for their well-deserved Oscar submission and you’ll be even more impressed.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

Interesting to note that the coal industry in the U.S. employs just a tad over 40,000 people, according to the BLS. The same source tells us that 64,000 people work at wineries.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."
