I genuinely love digital art. So this isn’t me being a dinosaur.But what he showed in Miami? Sorry… no.
The $100k digital boxing rings with Bezos, Zuck and Musk as robot heroes facing off against Picasso and Warhol and Beeples himself — meant to be clever, just felt… icky. Performative. Hollow.But the part that actually bothered me: he represented himself. No gallery. At Basel! If any other artist tried that, the floor would swallow them whole. Galleries literally keep the whole system standing — they cannot be thrilled about this.And there was another artist casually selling his own work on the floor, like it was a Saturday market. What are we doing?And yes, it all “sold out.” People buy lots of things. Sales don’t equal validation.And because I know someone will ask — I love @artbasel. Truly. Paris was my favourite fair of the entire year (and I did Basel, Aspen, London, Paris, Miami… I’ve done the rounds). And I loved seeing @jamesturell installed the way it was in this section and being a part of the fair so it’s not all bad. Digital art deserves a proper platform. Digital artists like @tivonrice and James Coupe and @gretchenandrew deserve a spotlight. 
This just wasn’t it.Curious what you think. Art? Anti-art? Pure spectacle?
