It's some kind of bizarre zero-sum thinking, as if Trump being terrible means that W and Reagan are now de facto good. It doesn't work like that! They are/were all awful!

If we just accepted that public opinion was always the thing our leaders should be chasing, things like the civil rights act and suffrage would have never happened. It takes leaders with moral backbone to say THIS IS WRONG and public opinion FOLLOWS THAT.
