A good overview from @apnews.com of Trump admin's funding pause for Chicago's Red Line Extension because of US DOT's complaint that CTA is using "race-based contracting."

The contracting approach CTA used was mandated by US DOT & Congress.

The pause will increase costs, lengthen project timelines.

Transit agencies now face a cliff in 2028, and funding for street safety is being quietly defunded in real terms. That’s a recipe for more traffic deaths and a stagnating economy. The coming year must be a turning point.

Don't call it a package! What we can do now that the stopgap has passed
The sunsetting of transit funding and lack of investment in main streets, sidewalks, and community paths = chaos, more traffic deaths and a stagnating economy for Oregonians

The stopgap bill to fund transportation that was passed in the Oregon Senate buys us time, but it does not buy us stability. We need to look ahead to 2026 and 2027 now, to when we’ll have legislative opportunities to pass a comprehensive transportation package and fund safety for all Oregonians.

“Don’t call it a package — this deal kicks the transportation funding can down the road while leaving the most vulnerable Oregonians behind," said @thestreettrust.org, agreeing with Oregon counties that this is budget stopgap, not a long-term funding solution.
