Because the Whos have a festival called Christmas, but no knowledge or understanding of Christ/Christianity, I think we have to assume the opposite; that they’re a relict human population living in the far future of an earth devastated by nuclear war

there are uk teams named after the Vikings despite bloody viking raids in the 9th century. we know nothing of the grinch’s historical timeline. perhaps he did his damage a thousand years prior to the establishment of whoville university and now the threat of a grinching is treated like a joke

i remember foxtrot once had a series of strips where the creator basically made fun of all the other major newspaper strips and in the dilbert one he explicitly called adams out for stealing work stories from his fans and refusing to pay them or acknowledge their contributions.

it’s hard to go “well, I just got lucky” because it means you didn’t really earn everything you have, which would mean you need to start thinking about whether or not you actually deserve it.

my take is that this is what happens when your accomplishments/recognition outstrip your personal effort. when you’re handed something akin to “living god” status you may start believing that you ARE a living god. that means everything you think is good and correct and anyone who disagrees is evil.
