I did a project on tv/film copaganda a while ago, and one of the most telling things I found was from the 1917 Charlie Chaplin film Easy Street, in which a woman chides Chaplin's police officer character and says "but you promised to reform!" It just goes round and round, decade after decade.

a paragraph from the Wired article linked below: Data Center Watch’s first report covered a period from May 2024 to March of 2025; in that period, it found, local opposition had blocked or delayed a total of $64 billion in data center projects (six projects were blocked entirely, while 10 were delayed). But Data Center Watch’s new report found that opposition blocked or delayed $98 billion in projects from March to June of 2025 alone—eight projects, including two in Indiana and Kentucky, were blocked in those three months, while nine were delayed. One of those projects, a $17 billion development in the Atlanta suburbs, was put on hold in May after the county imposed a 180-day moratorium on data center development, following significant pushback from local residents.

I only recently realized that the Lower Decks opening credits take this scene directly from TNG's Realm of Fear (in which the Enterprise is assisting the crew of the USS Yosemite (get it), a science vessel that got stuck in the plasma stream). Lower Decks you are an unending delight

lately I think a lot about this New American Movement poster from the seventies. as true now as it was then. (NAM is a precursor of the DSA)

(this is tough because I know I watched a lot of TNG as a kid that I don't remember, but this is the first episode I have a very concrete memory of watching when it aired. because it FREAKED ME THE HELL OUT)

omg honey lavender ice cream sounds amazing! here's the recipe (from my stepmother).
Janet's Lavender Jelly 

 3 1/2 cups water
 1/2 cup dried lavender flowers
 Juice of 1 lemon (1/4 cup)
 1 (1 3/4-ounces) box powdered pectin or 1 pouch (3-ounces) liquid pectin
 4 cups sugar 
In a large saucepan over high heat bring water just to a boil. Remove from heat, stir in dried lavender flowers, and let steep for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, strain mixture into a deep kettle or pot, discarding the lavender flowers. Stir in lemon juice and pectin; continue stirring until the pectin is dissolved.
 Over high heat, bring the mixture to a boil; add sugar. When the jelly solution returns to a hard rolling boil, let it boil for 2 to 4 minutes (see below), stirring occasionally.
After boiling, transfer the jelly into hot sterilized jars. Fill them to within 1/4 inch of the top, wipe any spilled jam off the top, seat the lids and tighten the ring around them. 
Makes five 1/2 pints.

scrolling through a selection of pride-themed t-shirts and I do have one question about whether Canadian Tire is inherently gay
a selection of eight t-shirts. one says "just be a great human" with a rainbow lego figure, one has a rainbow design, one has the progress pride flag with some people on it, one is the leather pride flag, one says "proud mary" in rainbow, one says "no apologies" and shows a burning car (a reference to the Harvey Milk protests), and one has a rainbow sheep. In the middle, one of the t-shirts is just the Canadian Tire logo.

what are your favourite titles from peer-reviewed academic articles? here are a few I have saved to show students different ways to title an essay, including rhyme, mimicking, sexy pun, and Just Keep It Simple. I'd love more examples, tho!
