196 years ago, on the 8th of October 1829, Stephenson’s Rocket won the Rainhill Trails in which five locomotives competed. Stephenson’s Rocket was the only one to complete the rails. A light engine running speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) was reached. Prize money was £500. #otd #history 🗃️

Special shout out to Thomas Brandreth who attempted to enter The Cycloped into the competition (pictured below) despite the "no horses" rule.

The Rocket combined various previous innovations creating the most advanced locomotive at the time. It became the template for most steam engines in the following 150 years.

81 years ago, on the 7th of October 1944, a group of Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz II-Birkenau rebelled against the Nazi guards of the camp. 452 prisoners and 3 guards were killed. About 80 prisoners managed to flee, of which, according to researchers, 27 escaped and survived the war. #otd #history🗃️
Memorial to the victims of the Sonderkommando revolt at Crematorium IV
The text reads: On October 7, 1944, members of the Sonderkommando – the special detachment of Jewish prisoners who were forced to empty the gas chambers after a mass gassing and undertake the burning of the corpses – organized the only armed revolt that ever took place at Auschwitz. They succeeded in destroying Gas Chambers and Crematorium IV. More than 450 heroic prisoners who took part in the revolt were murdered by the SS, either during the revolt itself or subsequently for the purpose of retaliation.

The rebelling prisoners were part of the Sonderkommando, which is why this event is referred to as the Sonderkommando revolt. This so called 'special unit' was formed by the Germans and forced to assist in the disposal of gas chamber victims.

136 years ago, on the 6th of October 1889, the Jardin de Paris, now known as the Moulin Rouge, opened at the foot of Montmartre. The intention was to attract rich customers to the fashionable yet poor district. The Moulin Rouge is known, among other things, for the Can-can. #history #otd 🗃️

The founders were businessmen Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler. Many famous performers passed through the establishment such as dancers la Goulue and Jane Avril as well as the clown Cha-U-Koa.

751 years ago, on the 4th October 1274, 1,000 Mongol soldiers landed on the island of Tsushima in Kublai Khan’s first attempted invasion of Japan. The Mongols later retreated, in part due to a storm damaging their fleet. A second attempt at invasion in 1281 would fail as well. #history #otd #japan 🗃️

Perhaps a random addition, but some Brits may enjoy this knowledge. In EastEnders, long time character Harold Legg recalls the Battle of Cable Street before his death in a 2019 episode. "It was our fight. It was everyone's fight. It still is.' www.youtube.com/watch?v=731K...

Eventually, the police withdrew and demanded Mosley turned around. Anti-fascists celebrated the collaboration between Irish Catholics, Jews, Orthodox Jews, dockers, Somali seamen and more inhabitants of the East End. Fascists portrayed the event as their freedom of speech being denied.

Protesters attempted to block the route of the march by obstruction. Marching though the East End, which had a large Jewish community, was an obvious provocation. Barricades were erected in Cable street. The Metropolitan Police then tried to clear the way leading to various clashes.
Barricades were effectively used by anti-fascists to stop the police advance through Cable Street.

An effort to have the fascist march, led by Oswald Mosley, banned was 100,000 Londoners’ autographs strong. The Home Secretary allowed it regardless, thanks to support for the DUF in both the police and the press (see Daily Mail headline below).

89 years ago, on the 4th of October 1936, antifascist counter protesters stopped a British Union of Fascists march through London’s East End. The Metropolitan Police tried to clear the way for the fascists resulting in violent clashes known as the Battle of Cable Street. #otd #history 🗃️
