Enzo Traverso's fierce critique of the return to 'Grossdeutschland', in New German Critique. End both funny and horrifying.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

Anti-immigration demonstration in the Netherlands escalates. This is exactly what happens when far-right ideas are tolerated and normalised over an extended period of time. The far right gains confidence and grows, both at the ballot box and in the streets.

As was posted earlier, how to delete your account without agreeing to the ToS:

Opening this "privacy policy" link www.academia.edu/privacytakes you to a page where you can access the drop-down menu and reach "account settings." From there I was able to delete my account without agreeing.

"It is time to resist the injustice that now threatens to be normalized by those who capitulate, sometimes in advance, to powers that are clearly willing to destroy the basic principles that protect the university’s independence against external manipulations." www.chronicle.com/article/when...

Oh yes, that was brutal.

Yes, in 10 years between my longer stays it lost a lot of the good sides I imagined it had. Especially sour if you are researching self-organised initiatives in housing.
Then, there is ‘Erziehung nach Gaza’ to take into account etc.

I better get into coal trade.

Sigh. Millennial here. My young family moved 9 times within two years in Berlin due to the wicked housing market for migrants and German housing regulations that work against foreign researchers.

And indeed, I still see carpenters and members of other building trades in their special uniforms around town. Which actually tells a lot about their autonomy unlike in some other countries we know 🙁

This was also on Winsstraße! Not even sure if someone poor can live there now (unaffordable for me for sure). But, this situation brings this feeling of poverty and fuel shortages in the air.
tijana.bsky.social
This is actually the first time in my life to see coal as a household fuel. And it is (checks notes) in leafy Prenzlauerberg, Berlin, 2025. Not in the picture, single human carrying these full baskets of coal on his back.

'"You can’t have hobbyist research that’s unfunded going on in institutions. We can’t afford it.”'

Such a badly formulated phrasing of the issues, so open to so many misinterpretations. If this is the level of thinking about research among sector leaders and policy-makers, be very afraid.
