Hm, I think this snippet on the Wikipedia page might be incorrect - the 0.1 mSv day figure from the cited site makes sense as a 'contribution from the Jovian charged particle wiggler' but I think GCR doses would be comparable to Luna? I don't think the Jovian magnetosphere should do much at ~26 Rj

oh yeah but that one's less oversight than handwave - they assumed enough of a slice of neutrons would be soaked up by the smushed hydrogen plasma to render tapering unnecessary. I recall talking about this with @gbruhaug.bsky.social ages ago and him thinking that this is unlikely to be true though

the Marshall SFC z-pinch ship design is also very fun I think, it's endearing how it's a sort of 2010s tech caveman fusion rocket with a gain barely into the double digits... cutting those massive sixty-tonne capacitor banks down to size with SMES batteries would do wonders for the mass ratio alone

thinking about rereading Blue Remembered Earth (and maybe the rest of the Poseidon's Children books) lately... it's been a looong time. always was fond of the sketch design Reynolds posted of the interplanetary ship 'Winter Queen' on his blog around the time it came out.

The early (circa 2000) solar-electric drive designs for these Mars mission profiles were also cute, very charmingly unconventional - almost evocative of Age of Sail schooners with their great triangular solar wings.

I still have such a soft spot for the old nuclear-thermal Mars DRA (Design Reference Architecture) mission designs that were all the rage from the late 1990s to the 2010s. I wonder how many historical butterflies you'd need to flap their wings for these birds to have actually taken flight...

I do think the idea of putting what is effectively the laser driver system of a fusion pulse rocket at the top of a borehole and using it as the powerhouse for god's own drilling rig kind of goes hard, is the thing.
