I have a weakness for isometric management games, obscure simulators, irrelevant details of long-dead memory addressing schemes and listening to "The Legend Of Xanadu" more times than is strictly age-appropriate.
I have become COMPLETELY OBSESSED with a concerning dearth of records in 2025, but of the very few this is one of them. youtu.be/hfzgPFGCEsU?...

It's Monday, it's grid time.

For this year's lightly amusing review of some Christmas-themed collection of music, I decided to review every UK Christmas #1 since 1952. I rolled a critical failure.

Imagine a boot stamping on a 7" single of "Last Christmas", forever:

I Review Every UK Christmas #1
I find myself faced with an awkward choice this year. 'Tisn't really the season to provide some sort of low-level support for the playlist-military complex while despairing at some poor intern's attem...

Last week's listening presented for your disapproval.

When you play an MP3 and you're not sure which is the more damning evidence of its age - the YEAR tag being set to "1997", or the bitrate counter showing 178kbps VBR.

It was obsessive to the point of being a waste of disk space at the time, honest!

I'm preparing my annual Christmas playlist review early, so it's ready for December. This means I am now EQUALLY AS PROFESSIONAL as the Hootenanny.

I started a THING with someone else where every Monday we post a 5x5 grid of what albums last.fm thinks we've been listening to and it turns out to be amazing, I have listened to more full albums in the past few weeks than I have for the entire rest of the year.

Had a fantastic time at the Centre for Computing History's Retro Computer Festival yesterday. Naturally I managed to take about 5 photos, one of which is of a freight train, so instead have this courtesy of @yesterzine.bsky.social showing me in my natural habitat.

Looking at the performance of the last couple of videos like, "fuck, I need a momentum killer".

If a flat roof pub is the worst sort of pub, then surely the best possible pub would be to build one into the base of a space elevator.

The combination of having a big rubble and dust generating task on at the house and listening to too much Hawkwind is I keep finding myself singing "Henry, hoover with a name / I want your help yet once again".

I refuse to accept LLMs are any good until one of them can answer "what is the cure for lawn skinheads" with "take them bowling".

My partner bought me a very nice DAC/headphone amplifier thing which with my personality is probably the most antisocial item I could be given, in the sense I will resume contact with the outside world in (checks Foobar2000) 5 weeks, 2 days and 17 hours.

At least I'm using the closed-backs with it.

Not to say the cognitive decline is real but I just expressed a concept as, "made a new cow using some existing other cows".

I attempted to shut down my work laptop and came back to it to find it still running with a "do you want to stop debugging?" dialog open in Visual Studio which at this point on a Friday I think technically means we should arrest Windows for treason.

Enjoy those videos where someone takes four times as long as any reasonable being should to make a point? Live for when someone says "without further ado" and yet there is, in fact, further ado?

Here, have FIFTY ONE MINUTES of "I respect Black & White. I'm not sure I like it." youtu.be/h_XsmUwgCCo
Black & White was revolutionary - but was it fun?

Partner claimed there was nothing good in the 7" collection. I would defend, but instead I'll just post the 5 things at the front of Singles Box B and let you judge.

Not to say my brain is a stew of massive filesystem corruption after getting back home at 3am last night, but I just tried to remember the seven deadly sins and they came back as,

WRATH
LUST
BOTH
CLANG
TROUSERS
SPINNING
GLUTTONY

'80s child challenge: hear "Take My Breath Away" in the background at the supermarket without getting the strange feeling that you ought to own a Peugeot 405.

One big advantage the current generation of kids has over mine is the ability to answer the classic parent and/or teacher "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING???" with "general performance and stability improvements".

We did some clearing out at the weekend and I have located what feels like the world's scungiest iPod. Whoever owned it before me applied every type of protector they could find to it, all of which have attempted to regress back to primordial sludge in the decades since.
