Worked at Stonehenge, built a Long Barrow. Peasant farmer in Wiltshire.
The shareable Historic England photograph of Richard Atkinson under Stone 55b needs rotating so I created a freely shareable drawing as it should be.
Not a recommended archaeological technique.

In October 2024 I discovered photos of enigmatic engravings on the Stonehenge Altar Stone in the English Heritage archive - I have just created three drawings of them which are free to use with acknowledgment. Link in comments.

Marginalia in a @wiltshiremuseum.bsky.social book:
"Learn still and let thy mind be fed
For without learning life itself is dead"
There seems to a couple of more lines in pencil and the date 1567 - intriguing and still true.

It is interesting to see the calculated power output from the Council's planned Wind Turbine at High Post Salt Depot based on the nearby Boscombe Down weather records for today. Couldn't even warm up a Pot Noodle on such a cold day. Wind Turbines don't work as a power source on cold days.

The non-symbolic symbol on the Long Barrow door this morning, the passageway is aligned to midwinter sunrise.

Cattle standing around lowing when the Angel of the Lord came down may not be strictly historically or theologically accurate, but I like the photo. Happy Christmas.

Pick any period you like - here's Nov 24 - Feb 25. Useless in cold weather. Warm and windy is not when a Salt Store needs power, apart from a base load.

Here's the graph of last week's wind speeds, temperature and the power the proposed turbine would produce. No power when the temperature drops to when gritters are needed, useless for onsite consumption. Averages are for offsetting, which mean the turbine can be sited elsewhere.

It may be the greatest Christmas album ever, but having Phil Spector's cassette stuck in the tractor, so it won't eject, means I rather tire of it over the year.

Stonehenge’s solstice alignments clockface:
Midsummer sunrise at 12, midwinter sunset at 6. Altar Stone skewed along the chord from 15 min to 42 min, exactly 81°, midwinter sunrise. Central trilithon parallel chord.
60-point outer circle embeds both solstice directions with simple lines. Sarsen.org

I was lucky enough to see Spinal Tap playing at Stonehenge, all directed by Rob Reiner. I hope the concert film, due out in the spring, is seen as a fitting tribute to him.

Wiltshire Council's planned wind turbine will stick up like a sore thumb when looking south from Woodhenge, most of the mast will be visible as well as the blades. (Stonehenge isn't the only important monument)

An elevation plan shows that Wiltshire Council's proposed Wind Turbine at High Post (PL/2025/06175) will expose Stonehenge to the distracting sight of the flashing tips of the blades. Completely ignoring the Council's WHS Setting Study and Core Policy 59, what a joke.

This unassuming hand-forged wrought-iron drain grate in Devizes is a tiny masterpiece of Georgian/Victorian street furniture. Quietly doing its job for 200+ years. It deserves to be listed on the Local Heritage List.
