Worked at Stonehenge, built a Long Barrow. Peasant farmer in Wiltshire.
It is interesting to see the calculated power output from the Council's planned Wind Turbine at High Post Salt Depot based on the nearby Boscombe Down weather records for today. Couldn't even warm up a Pot Noodle on such a cold day. Wind Turbines don't work as a power source on cold days.

To be fair it will also be visible from the ridge between Tan Hill and Milk Hill on the Marlborough Downs (Salisbury Cathedral Spire can also be seen), it will be noticeable especially with rotating blades and an aircraft warning light but I would concede that from that distance not too bad.

Yep , the turbine is on a very sticky wicket, time for you to draw stumps and concede. Get back to the fire and enjoy Christmas, all the best to you and yours.

Yes, its about balance between harm and benefit. The renewable energy benefit can be delivered from anywhere if there is no site specific reason for it situation, as in this case. So that benefit has no weight in placing the turbine here.

The expert opinion:

For "demonstrable harm" you would have to show an historic significance of sight-line from the Neolithic monuments affected (relative to anywhere else).

Where did you get that idea from?
December 20, 2025 at 5:12 PM
No, it clearly demonstrates with data that the claimed rationale for the turbine is nonsense and as such holds no weight against the demonstrable harm it would do to the landscape. Planners like having substance to base their discision on.

Thanks - I didn't know of this, found it on youtube music

Pick any period you like - here's Nov 24 - Feb 25. Useless in cold weather. Warm and windy is not when a Salt Store needs power, apart from a base load.

Here's the graph of last week's wind speeds, temperature and the power the proposed turbine would produce. No power when the temperature drops to when gritters are needed, useless for onsite consumption. Averages are for offsetting, which mean the turbine can be sited elsewhere.
December 20, 2025 at 11:03 AM
There is a complete mismatch between the site's consumption pattern and the potential production. Simply there is no reason for it to be there, offsetting can and should happen elsewhere in a less sensitive and problematic site.

I've done the calculations, Boscombe Down has wind speed records. On cold nights when the gritters are being filled with salt you would be lucky to boil a kettle from the power from the turbine.
