Not sure if it's our brains or if it's in our culture (all those stories of grand heroic acts that vanquish the bad guy once and for all), but people are really resistant to the idea of digging in for a long fight. Not sure what fixes it for people other than first-hand experience.

You talk about this all the time, but I feel like in the conversations I have people really struggle with the idea of small steps. They hear suggestions and think "that won't fix everything so why bother." Obviously a perspective that comes from not having done political/organizing work in the past.
