The expedition aims to answer how the Arctic Ocean looked like during warm periods in Earth's history. Was it ice-free back then? How did the marine ecosystem change? Scientists look for clues to these questions in sediments deposited over hundreds of thousands of years on the Arctic seafloor.

Back on R/V Kronprins Haakon!

I am currently covering an #expedition with the Norwegian #research icebreaker Kronprins Haakon in the #ArcticOcean. Earlier this week, the ship reached the geographic #NorthPole. Low sea-ice cover allowed for easy passage through the central #Arctic.

Is the #AMOC nearing collapse?

After four weeks in the #Arctic, I'm spending the next two months of my @frontiersmedia.bsky.social science journalism residency at @gfz.bsky.social in Potsdam. At GFZ, I'm embedded with the team of @lianegbenning.bsky.social who studies the secret lives and biogeochemistry of #glacier #microbes.

Four days ago, I boarded the Norwegian icebreaker Kronprins Haakon and joined an international team of researchers lead by @bjerknes.bsky.social for an expedition in the #Greenland Sea to study the effects of #Arctic climate change on #ocean circulation.

I just started my @frontiersmedia.bsky.social science journalism residency at @gfz.bsky.social and iC3. In the next 5 months, I'll explore how #glacier microbes and meltwater runoff affect the Earth system from the atmosphere to the #ocean.
