Work table from last week. Just thinking out loud about new possibilities in the work, research. I feel like these may become collage materials, that’s what’s been coming up for me internally since I made them.

[rewind] We Dance To Pray, 2013, acrylic on drywall, 9 x 13 feet
Part of my 2013 exhibition, Presence, at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery (Philadelphia, PA). I wanted to do something different with this wall space instead of putting another painting on it. Read more: open.substack.com/pub/timmcfar...

New work :: a new, currently untitled painting, acrylic on canvas, 54” x 36” (137.16 x 91.44cm)
This was going to be a flatter, more overall monochromatic painting, with the form more of a part of the background. At some point, things shifted, prompting me to make some space between form and ground.

Dried acrylic paint forms that I've had around for years, going back to 2005 or even sooner. Most of it is paint that dried out in containers and some from palette surfaces. I've pulled them out again and this time, I think I've found a way forward with it.

Everyday Is Everyday Is Everyday, 2023, acrylic on canvas, 60” x 72”

At one point, this was going to be vertical, and then I changed my mind. 99% of the time, the work requires that we rethink what we do so the work can thrive.

Mid-afternoon studio selfie. Taking advantage of the great light today. The sun is slowly moving higher in the sky day by day, spring is coming. Today’s high is in the low 40s, practically summer compared to last week’s single digit-high teens cold.

Photography helps in documenting my observations of human interventions in the built environment. I’m attracted to the residue of these interactions and how they shape my experiences moving through spaces. Some of this plays into my painting practice.

Four from my “Daily Observations” series.

Usually, by the time I stop with a painting I’m pretty set on an orientation of the image. This new painting was having none of that. Its future owner will have a choice of installing it vertically or horizontally.
