New on my channel! I have made the video I have always wanted to see, about the innovative filmmaker who directed the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and captured many millennials of a certain age. & the box office!

Joe Dante has said that Mazursky considered shipping the leftover Clamp Center Mall set from Gremlins 2 to New York for this film. Imagine that.

One terribly minor error that only nerds will spot: Todd speaks about the argument for building a full working live-action set, but it's partially accompanied by a shot of a mostly matte painted interior from Empire Strike Back. However, it's such a convincing shot that the point isn't lost.

A great, well illustrated and digestible video about modern visual effects. @tvaziri.com talks passionately from a film storytelling as opposed to a technical perspective, highlighting the artistry & humanity of what many wrongly assume is now some automated process.

Thank you for sharing. You can really hear the similar sound of the Simon and Garrett songs!

When I first saw the film I thought the opening montage song was a film mix of Forever Your Girl by Paula Abdul. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d cut to it, fell in love with the track but couldn’t use it, so commissioned a soundalike.

I really enjoy the super twee, Hollywood depiction of the UK in the film. It’s a cartoon fairytale & everyone looks like they are having such a fun time. I like that James Newton Howard got to do a pompous Rule Britannia fanfare on this and the similarly toned King Ralph the following year.

I just read that the Peanuts are 75 years old today.

Good Grief!

I enjoy Dick Tracy, but given the illustrated, comic panel and matte painted look, it's quite a static movie. Having it married with the kaleidoscopic finale of Rollercoaster Rabbit would give a lot of rich, visual variety.

For die hard Star Wars fans and writers:

The YouTube channel Storyjerk has just released an enormous 2.5 hour long video essay, analysing the writing of all of the Star Wars films.

Two minutes of probably the most no-expense-spared cartoony animation you'll ever see. I never get tired of the kaleidoscopic POV from the rollercoaster.

When the Roger Rabbit short ROLLER COASTER RABBIT was produced by Disney & Amblin, Spielberg wanted it packaged with ARACHNOPHOBIA. Michael Eisner wanted to release it with DICK TRACY & ultimately won out. Its a shame Spielberg & Disney only made 3 Roger Rabbit shorts because they were immaculate.

If Roller Coaster Rabbit had played before Arachnophobia, it would have been a Frank Marshall directorial double bill.

My favourite track. The whole album is well done, very fun & generally tongue in cheek, but of the non-Sondheim tunes, this is the heart of it. It's magic when the drum kicks in at 3:12. It also says a lot that Madonna named her 1995 ballad compilation album after it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=74cd...

One of two Darkwing Duck Playmates action figure TV commercials. This recording aired in 1992 and features Steelbeak and Tuskernini.

There are a couple of lovely bits of Darkwing brand visual humour in this.

GREAT new little short film:

If you have 4.5 minutes and like comforting sounds and a view of a time that no longer exists, take a warm trip down a millennial memory lane of technology and ASMR.

You likened the marketing campaign to that of Batman. It even had its own version of "Batdance": an irreverent medley of the soundtrack albums original pop songs, with dialogue samples from the film all set to a dance beat. However, it wasn't released as a single.

You can find a Karnage plane on ebay, between $200-400. It was a classic toy that translated exactly from the cartoon & was made as presented in the video. It even had a mini-trapdoor in the seat, to allow for Karnage's tail!

The Ratcatcher was pretty accurate (aside from having too many stickers).

I quite like how the retirement home location looks comparable to Hogwarts from the Harry Potter films, also directed by Columbus. Each of the dwelling interiors look as though you could park a bus inside of them. A great theatrical setting to keep the dialogue driven story visually interesting.

I've been thinking about how well composed, choreographed, staged & blocked the camera & actors are in this film. Lots played out in very wide shots with two to four actors in the frame, and when the camera moves to a new composition, they all reposition, effortlessly, & in time, to balance it out.

The Thursday Murder Club:

I was expecting a light hearted and entertaining whodunnit. Pleasantly surprised to find it’s also a touching tale about old age, facing death and the fear of losing the people you love. Admirably directed by Chris Columbus.

It does feel in some ways like an old fashioned Disney live action last hurrah, from the use of sodium
Vapour screen special effects and Ellenshaw matte paintings to a cameo by Dick Van Dyke.
