could be any of the 1-4, too difficult to narrow down

I don't know that this is the *most* unethical thing David Frum has ever done, but in terms of professional *journalistic* ethics? Whooo boy

unfortunately the only place ive seen this work is weho and its because they’re all jacked 30-something guys who dress like they live at the gym

it is slightly uncharitable but not completely wrong to say that doctors are a hereditary guild that ransoms your life back to you when you get sick.
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
they’re usually either 2 or 4
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
doctors are second to police in having a completely undeserving reputation of altruism mostly derived from daytime television

there’s also random mainline prot schools that are much less common than the catholic schools but serve the same function
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
no, you misunderstand me, the parents are the racists
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
slightly above the local public school system in quality for $35k/yr
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
most people assume private schools are all #4 but # 1 & 2 are by far the most common
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
four types of private schools in america:

1) catholic schools for racists
2) nondenom schools that dont teach you science
3) hippie schools that dont teach you to read, inexplicably 87% matriculation @ top 20 colleges
4) hogwarts, costs 55k/yr, explicably 99% matriculation @ top 20 colleges

Having gone to a really shitty private school is so funny. People hear “private school” and rightly think my parents were well off but instead of playing lacrosse or whatever I was learning young earth creationism from a Russian antisemite in portables outside a church

There's an idea in some circles that all we have to do to fix healthcare is get rid of the evil insurance companies and all of our problems will be solved.

There is no country on Earth with single-payer healthcare where the average doctor salary is $375,000. Not happening. Something has to give.

The doctor makes $200k a year because they charge thousands of dollars more for a procedure than they should. The health insurance CEO doesn’t want to pay it and tries to dump it on you. You fight with the health insurance over *who* pays the high cost and not *why* the cost is high.

doctors are a self regulating profession who decide their own entry requirements. congress also caps the number of new physicians with residency requirements

The doctor making 200k a year is not your enemy. The health insurance CEO making millions per year is. Let’s focus up.

its ~12.5k in a high tax state, 15k in a state w/o income tax. there is a big difference between someone earning 8k/mo after student loan payments and someone earning 5k/mo
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
its also not even clear that having this high a threshold improves physician quality all that much, what it does it make the field mainly attractive to people who know how to navigate the baroque entry requirements - chiefly the children of doctors
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
they want it to be really hard to become a doctor because it makes being a doctor *elite*
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
i agree - but it would make a huge difference for healthcare quality and access! i think all this is mainly about industry prestige tbh, esp for the late career board physicians who decide entry requirements into the field
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
living on *just* 9k/month as a young doctor while you pay back your loans is not a terrible punishment
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
even in a state like california with state income tax, thats like 13-14k/mo *post tax*.
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
lmao 250k is not 10k/mo take home
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
the median salary for a physician in family medicine is 250k. for basically all specialists, its 300k+. you can pay back a couple hundred grand in student debt in a few years by being on the low end of the wage distribution for a doctor.
