somehow I ended up with an Escher-inspired Tortoise & the Hare situation

1-Bit pixel art in black and white - a scene inspired by tiling animal patterns of M.C. Escher. Smug tortoise tiles intersect seamlessly with panic faced Hares between - with some blank patches for visual balance. A border adorns the image, coming from a battery icon in the top right. The tortoise tile in the bottom right has its front legs poking out over the border.

I spent a bunnnnnch of time faffing about with the layout

I realised that with the tiny size + 1-Bit + limited tiles meant that things got visually busy very fast

adding in some blank white areas helped restore that "balance", and I added some chunky outline to make some shapes stand out more

because it's a tile, adjusting the tail was also modifying the tip of the wing & back of the head 😬

but I soon saw other (easier) shapes and it suddenly became a rabbit's head

I looked for other shapes in the pattern and had the "a-HA!" moment of turning this into The Tortoise & the Hare

my first idea for the theme "Balance" was to do some kind of repeating tile pattern - but with the strict absolute black/white 1-Bit palette, I decided to do something M.C. Escher inspired :D

the first idea was a hummingbird/flower combo, buuuut I couldn't get the shape to work

Here's the process! It took a lot of twists and turns 😅 I had a lot of fun with it though!

The extra challenge of it being 1-Bit and having the restriction on number of unique tiles was a nice puzzle to solve
