We're looking at pollinators in the Nursery - This is a male Common Blue butterfly - polyomatus Icarus. The hindwing of both sexes have a row of reddish/orange spots.

Brimstone butterflies (Gonepteryx rhamni) overwinter 7 months then feed up on spring flowers. The female leads males an upward dance before tumbling down to mate. She usually lays on the 2 buckthorn (rhamnus) species, purging & alder, the caterpillars' food

Dark-edged Bee-fly (Bombylius major). Females coat their eggs in dust & sand before flinging them at solitary bee & wasp nests with rapid twists of her body. Thanks to Marlis, Sue, Jody and George for coming out on a glorious Sunday morning and watering all the trees we planted this last winter season. We’re happy to report all the trees attended to yesterday are bursting with the uplifting optimism that spring always brings with it.

Hackney Downs park planting with volunteers on Sun 9 Mar. We planted 3 trees, a sorbus latifolia (broad-leaved whitebeam), a sorbus aucuparia (rowan) and a laburnum x watereri (laburnum) - adding to 7 which we planted back in Dec 24, so a total of 10 new trees this planting season.
