The New Garden Society is a non-profit organization that provides therapeutic and vocational horticulture training. In all its endeavors, TNGS partners with host agencies to design and implement programming that supports participants’ wellbeing.
Due to the nature of our work, our programming runs March through November. That leaves our students waiting months, hungry for knowledge. This year, we’re running a series of Winter Movie Screenings! All movies selected are related to programming, covering topics such as pollinators, soil health,

At The New Garden Society, our prison gardens are made possible by a small community of donors who believe that the outdoors, education, and dignity are for everyone. This past month, we received donations from individuals, and had many more help our cause by sharing our posts.

This season, there were over 60 of us, (incarcerated and ‘free’), gathering in prison yards over the the year, learning through drought, planting vegetables, tucking flowers in our hair and sharing what we know. We’ve steadily received donations for the past decade to keep this lean ship afloat..

Let me take you back to a remarkable moment from my summer. I am in a garden behind a Boston prison. The sun is strong. I hear someone approaching the garden, and I look up to see a familiar face with bright eyes and a sideways smile. I know them! M gardened with us years ago at a different prison.

Our vocational training is a large part of our programming, but it provides so much more. It isn't just about learning topics in horticulture. It's about having a place to breathe. It means enjoying fresh produce. It means time outside - fresh air, sunshine, time away from the noise and walls.

Hope takes root in the prison garden. We believe everyone deserves access to the garden, fresh produce, time outdoors. Students who take part in our programming feel confidence, peace, gain skills. They reflect on memories of gardening, and they share their newfound knowledge with their families.
