In English we know it as “Carol of the Bells,” but the melody arises from a Ukrainian folk tradition of songs welcoming the new year and summoning the forces of nature to meet human labor and bring prosperity.
Do listen.
I wrote about the history here: snyder.substack.com/p/o-generous...
Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

What a wonderful day. Over 2,500 people came out in my mountain town. I couldn't believe how far we stretched along the busiest street, and even way around the corner. And the cars going by honked, waved, gave us thumbs up. Just lovely and inspiring.

For some time I've read this book every year, following along as the months unfold. Today I read the Dusk Chorus observation. Just what I needed. Thanks as always for the reminder Monty.

Son of a gun. My first attempt at Dibbleabbes might just be a success. And the best part isn't that I'm getting a decent crust. It's my partner doesn't care I have garden dirt under my nails.

Today I met with my Tribal Waste & Response Steering Committee. I can't tell you how uplifting it is, even virtually, to spend time with such an amazing group of people in such trying times. Gosh do I love and admire them.

The Felling of the U.S. Forest Service
The Trump Administration has cut two thousand workers, making it harder for the service to fight wildfires and repair storm damage across the country.

Finally. A decent snowfall. And blooming hyacinth. A Hermit Thrush came to our water dish, and the Juncos and nuthatches were excited about the nuts and seeds. After a week of defending community and fighting chaos, this feels wonderful.

Nine days and my wonderful local bookstore. It's an embarrassment of riches. We finally have some moisture bearing clouds we so desperately need. No planetary parade for me. Time to pick tonight's book and pour a glass of mead.

Mental break at Wupatki, one of my favorite places. Fought the good fight all last week, and needed some open spaces and the quiet of the high desert before diving in again 😁

Wishing everyone a wonderful Darwin Day! As per my tradition I made a carrot cake for my wonderful coworkers. This year we did something special and volunteered at our food center. They are amazing people and I'm grateful to work alongside them.

That was a wonderful break from work, where I've had to navigate the crisis this administration is causing. I did a double shift at our food center, handing out food boxes. My favorite coffee cup was run over by a forklift, but it was still an amazing time 😁
