Failed photographer of birds in flight, patch birder North of E. Cheshire. Enthusiastic grandfather. Wistfully not a paleoanthropologist.
Day's highlight was discussing taxonomy with my 6' 14yo grandson and the impact of Linnaeus.

No list today. A 'pioneering' walk, as I'm determined to find a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker next year.
There are 4 sites local to me that have records historically and a couple very near that fit the nesting criteria that have no records.
My only reward dozens of RN Parakeets pairing up noisily!

Welcome to my world.
I’m almost as confused as the Romans were! I must confess I thought it was Sunday…
Merry Yule! It’s the shortest day of the year and we can now look forward to the return of the light! The Romans seem to have been a bit confused about measuring the daylight and celebrated Sol on 25th December instead. That will never catch on!

Some shots from today including what I was thinking was a House Sparrow but might well be a Tree Sparrow as this is where I used to see them when there were feeders nearby.

Saturday mornings is Blossoms Lane Woodford. Last week lots of northern thrushes, this week only a single Redwing! 24 species in total including a lone Redpoll calling high up on a dying Ash.
Also multiple male Blackbirds - a feature of this Lane.

@nicolawriting.bsky.social has written a wonderful, stirring book, weaving together her knowledge of the landscape with those who have come before - the ghosts that haunt her local walks. I met a ghost too. My sister’s old horse Padjo gets an unexpected mention! Here he is over 40 years ago.

And used -tabbit- to produce 22,000 crosstabs for a single deliverable

(With a touch of conditional formatting to make them prettier)

Have since generated an R version, tabbitR, which is substantially faster

So I'm finally joining the darkR side 😆
