Crime thriller and horror writer.
I don't listen to a lot of classical but I do like Phillip Glass -- and having looked up Nyman on Spotify, it seems they both share listeners. I'm liking what I'm listening to so far. Feels oddly familiar.

I don't know if you're familiar with them, but the guys at RLM did the first part of a Friday the 13th Series review (this covers films 1-5). It's a great watch, IMHO
The Friday the 13th Series - re:View (Part 1)
Booooo spooky season has begun, which means it's time to scare Mike with the most frightening thing of all: a series of movies that are almost indistinguisha...

That's really cool. I know next to nothing about this genre of music, but my ears can at least hear the similarities. Well, sounds like I have a new musical rabbit hole to dive into :)

Given the classical instruments, I was convinced I was listening to a 80s film score. Vaguely reminds me of Rocky or something.

Checked this out on Spotify, and now I'm obsessed. Robots is especially mesmerising. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure how anyone can resist that face.

Thank you for sharing these links. They're perfect for me today, considering I'm attending a creepypasta workshop tonight. I hope you feel better soon.

That's one solution for sure, but maybe a little inconvenient. As a specs wearer myself, I often opt for a totally subtle and unnoticeable sports band solution. Like this one pictured. Guaranteed to hold the spirits in, even when engaging in physical activities.

But is it really wise to unblock the spirits and let them out? Seems dangerous to me.

Congratulations on slaying that demon. May the weird flow freely.

I think it may be too early to say. So many services come and go, it's hard to know if this will stick around. Everything is so fragmented these days.

It's not great, but I still think it's much better now than it was 50-100 years ago when only a very few people were allowed (or could afford) to write. There are way more opportunities now. Which, ironically, creates more competition and harder conditions for everyone.

Big fan of most of Bradbury's work, but Something Wicked has always been a standout for me. It captures what it's like being a youngster at the threshold of mystery so well.

Indeed. But without enforced quotas, when it comes to these prizes, I don't know how things can be balanced for everyone if we're not purely picking on merit (of the judges at the time).
September 22, 2023 at 2:07 PM
Forgive me, but I may need more context. Are you referring to the Brooker Prize or the industry in general? Women make up the majority of readers and authors in most genres these days. I've never seen women as a minority group.
September 22, 2023 at 2:06 PM
We can agree on that. Especially I'd like to see more representation for working-class authors and in terms of awards, books of other genres. Horror, romance, and crime are generally ignored, which excludes a vast swath of diverse voices.

Hope time with the kiddo and painkillers bring you some relief.
September 22, 2023 at 1:37 PM
Absolutely. I'd never suggest anyone can't comment or observe, but likewise, there is room for other observations too. I'm just trying to have a conversation and understand your position better. Would you have preferred to have seen more women and non-white people on the shortlist?
September 22, 2023 at 1:31 PM
It depends a lot on the definition as the prize hasn't always been international. Like most things, it was of its time, but diversity of gender isn't overly one-sided, especially the last few years. But my point stands: given the diverse panel this year, can the shortlist not be accepted on merit?
September 22, 2023 at 1:25 PM
No, this isn't an 'actually' reply. Merely adding to the conversation by showing that the booker shortlist, since its inception, has shown a fair degree of diversity. Given the panel choice this year, are we to believe that three women (two of which are non-white) don't have agency in their choices?
September 22, 2023 at 1:13 PM
There are three women and two women of colour on the panel, though. Having looked back through the years, it's always an eclectic mix from one year to another. Here's 1977 for example when there were more women than Pauls.
