Damn. Stay safe, northwest Alaska. Yet another reason why Congress rescinding public radio funds was a terrible, short-sighted action that will endanger Alaskans’ lives. These stations and the disaster updates they broadcast are an essential lifeline.

kotzebue, alaska declared a mandatory evacuation order

If Alaska could have levied a production tax/royalty on sales of ranch dressing like we did Prudhoe Bay oil, we wouldn’t have the fiscal problems we do now 🤔

Thank you @adn.com for publishing my obituary for perhaps the most beloved bear in the world: the late, great, king 480 Otis.
adn.com
Fat Bear Week has arrived, featuring some of the biggest and brawniest bears of Brooks River. But longtime fans will note that there are several beloved bears missing from this year’s bracket.
Remembering 480 Otis, the ‘Buddha of Brooks Falls’ and Fat Bear Week’s greatest champion
With four Fat Bear Week titles and a Zen master approach, the bear had garnered plenty of fans since it was first sighted in 2001.

Always great to see @deephi11.bsky.social out on the Equinox course! Also grateful her house is only a few miles in, because this would be more of a painful hobble at mile 20 😂

Hundreds of brave souls just ran or walked through my backyard during the 2025 Equinox Marathon. Loved seeing long-time friends. @tomhewittnews.bsky.social

I think it’s also a “lack of social graces” thing, but perhaps I’m being unkind.

I know that I will one day be old, but I hope I’m never “leaves my phone camera shutter noise on” old.

Sandhill cranes at Creamer's Field earlier this evening.

#alaska #fairbanks
Two sandhill cranes in mid-flight against a pale blue evening sky. The nearer crane is sharply focused, its wings fully extended, showing brown feathers with a reddish crown and long neck stretched forward. Its legs trail straight behind in flight. The second crane is partly visible, slightly behind and out of focus, with wings arched upward. The blurred outlines of treetops sit low at the bottom edge of the frame.

Hi Ramey - sorry, what am I avoiding? I’m not exactly following what you want from me here. I haven’t received any communication from you, so if you’ve sent something or called, that hasn’t come through, sorry.

I owe you a beer (or other beverage of your choice) when you get here!

The other day I saw a black convertible Corvette rolling around Fairbanks with the vanity plate TAX FRD, which is a… *bold* choice.

They've revised the Nenana quake to a magnitude 4.1, which feels more accurate to what we felt, I think.
tomhewittnews.bsky.social
None of that feels right to me; rare to feel anything that far away in the 3 range, especially for so long. But maybe there's something about it I'm missing.
tomhewittnews.bsky.social
Now seeing a 3 near Paxson but that's too small/far too, I think
tomhewittnews.bsky.social
Both of those seem too small for the duration of the one we felt, but who knows.
tomhewittnews.bsky.social
That was a weak but pretty long one. Usually means a larger one further away, but not seeing a high-magnitude quake at the AEIC website.

Hey @matthewkaminski.bsky.social, give me a hint on “War Pigs” for Schwarber; I’m not getting it.

I recognize exceptions exist, but as a general rule: Anchorage bad drivers tend to go too fast; Fairbanks bad drivers tend to go too slow. Agree or disagree?

I have one of those!
