I screened 40 titles exactly in the #Cannes lineup, and here are 15 films that excited me the most. Lynne Ramsay! Oliver Hermanus! Bi Gan! Joachim Trier! Hafzia Herzi! Oh mon dieu… For Elle Magazine: www.elle.com/culture/movi...

This happened to us last year, and learning that it is a common occurrence—that rats crawl into your car engine and start a new, warm, cozy life there—was nightmarish. Good luck. (And whatever spray they recommend after repairing your car, get it.)

“…..the U.S. funding cuts could result in more than 14 million deaths, including more than 4.5 million children under age 5, by 2030.”

Horrifying, devastating read. This administration and its supporters are evil, evil people. No other way to spin it.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER still rips. But for the life of me, no idea why the IMAX 70mm I saw today is darker (by a LOT) than the pitch-perfect, flawlessly to-die-for 70mm I saw at @filmlinc.bsky.social couple weeks ago. Why do chain theaters suck like this? Thought we went there for magic.

Josh Safdie’s MARTY SUPREME brought the house down at Alice Tully Hall. Breathtaking work all around, including and especially from Timothée Chalamet. LOVED. 🏓 #NYFF

Never saw the 2007 Australian croc horror ROGUE before. On Criterion now and it’s pretty awesome.

A busy week+ of watching NYFF films, attending receptions, and moderating various talks on films I love, with artists that inspire me (some of whom have inspired me my whole life). Feeling fortunate and grateful for the work that I get to do…

If you call a movie THE CHORAL, and you cast Ralph Fiennes as the conductor, and you tease St. Matthew Passion (which makes me cry) in it, you’re just cooking a movie in a lab precisely for me, hope you realize. 🎶🎵

I want a last day on a quiet beach before this weather turns. Like Wiborg or Gibson or Egypt. Just one final day of complete shutdown. Hope I can make it happen….🌊

There’s a *lot* to be enraged about, but those recruitment commercials ICE is running—basically telling police officers in sanctuary cities “they’re not allowing you to be cruel enough”—make me want to lose my mind.

You know, men, when you act like a jerk and manspread like this in public transit, your body language gives the exact opposite of the BDE that you are after. We all know you are compensating for something.

Few things made me hate our current cultural moment and priorities more than that Taylor Swift thingy stealing the screens that should belong to OBAA. (Everyone, especially men, this isn’t your opportunity to “educate” me on box office & distribution. Please, sshhhh!!!)

Nothing but respect for MY Supreme Marty. ♥️

Meanwhile I’m changing my prediction. bsky.app/profile/tomi...

Gonna change my guess from Hamnet to Marty Supreme. Reviews are under embargo for this one, and they obviously wouldn’t be for Hamnet.

I say Marty, you say Supreme.
tomilaffly.bsky.social
I’m usually on top of these things, but I don’t seem to be this year. Any idea what the NYFF secret screening might be on Monday? Can’t be MARTY SUPREME; I hear that’s still being ✂️. Is it something like HAMNET? BUGONIA…? The new AVATAR? (Okay I know it’s not Avatar.)

My guess is Hamnet too. (Though press screenings wouldn’t affect Bugonia being at NYFF — these screenings are more for general audiences.)

Now I must see that Marty/Supremes movie that you’ve described pronto. :)

US is going around murdering random people without evidence. In international waters. WTF are we doing continuing life as usual?

Breaking News: The U.S. struck another boat in the Caribbean, the U.S. defense secretary said, killing four men he accused of drug running, without offering evidence. He said he directed the strike on President Trump’s orders.

The stupidest Bluesky thing is the fact that you still cannot copy/paste an online image w/o making it look like a stupid link. They’re great at banning random accounts but they sadly still haven’t figured out how social media works.

Watching THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS as it’s horror season. Love the opening of Clarice jogging, sharing the elevator with tall dudes, trying to look all tough…. But then she has these tiny little pearl earrings, a small way she holds onto her femininity. Brilliant detail by Colleen Atwood.

Second time watching Jafar Panahi’s IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, and still a knockout. It hits even harder on a repeat watch. Stunner… #NYFF

A shame that today is the last day you can see Dead of Winter in most theaters. Great jump scares and a suitably menacing score. Judy Greer should play more villains. Thanks @tomilaffly.bsky.social for banging the drum on this one!
tomilaffly.bsky.social
Pleased to see largely positive reviews of DEAD OF WINTER, which refreshingly casts the perennial-nice-girl Judy Greer against type and welcomes Emma Thompson into her very own TAKEN era. Good flick.

DEAD OF WINTER, starring a muscular Emma Thompson (doing a Minnesota accent) & villainous Judy Greer is a solid snow thriller—embraces conventions & delivers something darker than expected. Fighting for a young girl & her own survival, Thompson in FARGO is a thing I didn’t know I needed in my life.🙏🏼
