Impressed by some of Bury and Bolton's new active travel upgrades. Here's some shots of Castleton phase 2. And look at this lovely new crossing (2024) in Rochdale. maps.app.goo.gl/tTb8QSbR2fvM... Just use the date slider to see how crap it was before.

Brand new on mereside in Cheshire East. Look at the kerbs.

This is the same council who redesigned the Adlington junction and didn't put buttons on the pedestrian crossings. And who also built a massive new bypass of Poynton, and then didn't implement any mitigation on the existing road network. And who apparently won't touch London Road North at all.

Cycle parking = no expense spent. Cycle blocking = no expense spared.

Gotta save space for those parked cars.

My favourite example of the lack of joined-up thinking in local government. maps.app.goo.gl/7vVLtozbDea7... Two streets separated by a stupid wall that serves no purpose. This type of thing is amazingly common throughout the UK and serves only to encourage driving rather than walking or cycling.

They could create an even better link from Mode Hill/Pole Lane in Unsworth, to Egypt Lane, by simply making the bridge ever so slightly wider and building a ramp and cycle path beneath their new bridge. The green line highlights the route. It would be easy for them to do.

Antwerp. You built the wrong kind of tunnel.

Belgium is pretty decent too. I love planning routes and not having to double check them on streetview.

A residential road crossing the Rail Trail 77 cycleway near Antwerp. Why can't we design stuff like this? Why do we always cede priority?
July 22, 2025 at 12:39 PM
This one near Stretford has been here at least 70 years. But it isn't a cycle lane so I suppose it's very safe... maps.app.goo.gl/NtdnSbKuo9rU...

And blocked.

This one in Trafford is a disaster. It can be seen from many miles away and emits so much light pollution. maps.app.goo.gl/diseNew8bNPi... It is absolutely enormous and has no right to be there.

@showmeasign.online might like this May 1966 image of J10 M60 (then the M63) courtesy of Geoff Skellon on Facebook, who was flying with his brother John.

The image Obama shows at the end - now look at the fireplace in the Oval Office. Cheap Wish.com plastic crap.

The local starlings are a)very noisy and b)love dried mealworms

I used ChatGPT to make improvements to a new housing estate a couple of miles away from me. Prompts included compacted gravel surface, Victorian kerbs, street trees and hedges replacing the walls. I know the surface wouldn't last long being driven on, but paving stones could do the same thing...

Reminds me of this mess near Manchester Airport. Before and after.

Locals are currently going a bit crazy about these width restrictors on Warburton Toll Bridge (work still underway)

If you're on Facebook it's well worth joining Bury Olden Days and looking for Brian Pearson's photos, there are loads of them like this.
