Some humility is needed on both sides if the project is going to amount to anything. The sooner the membership asserts itself, and replaces backroom squabbles with open discussion and actual political activity, the better the chances of building something worthwhile. The hour is later than we think.

Neither grouping has covered themselves with glory. Sultana has repeatedly responded to dithering by forcing the issue too rashly. But Corbyn and his allies have reacted much too defensively, and risk squandering an unprecedented political opportunity as a result.

The chaos around the launch of Your Party can't be allowed to derail the whole project. If anything, it shows the urgency of establishing democratic structures that hand control to the hundreds of thousands of potential members rather than feuding bigwigs.

Amy Dru Stanley's From Bondage to Contract: Wage Labor, Marriage, and the Market in the Age of Slave Emancipation also recommended for History Dept. Teaching Pateman for the first time in a few weeks.
