"She held nothing back, writing with such force that it felt as if she were ripping through the paper. When I began writing fiction, I felt that only by tearing the paper could I leave evidence that I had existed in this world."

Writing represents an act of resistance: it militates against all that is base and hateful, against death and annihilation. If writing is life, and life itself has turned into war, what more is left for us to write?

Shuang Xuetao's Hunter reviewed in Harper's Magazine

harpers.org/archive/2025...
sometimes felt like I was reading Jesus' Son with the drugs replaced by magical realism. Still, Shuang's prose, translated from the Chinese by Jeremy TIang, is hypnotic and taut, and cultural differences aside, S----- is a familiar city, gutted by globalism, its blank-faced sleepwalkers at once idiosyncratic and instantly recognizable. "Now everyone in the ambulance had their eyes shut," Shuang writes, "and we entered a common darkness."

Every day I buy
a can of pineapple with an expiration date of May 1
because May loves pineapple
and May 1 is my birthday.
I tell myself
that if she doesn’t come back
by the time I’ve bought 30 cans,
then our love will expire too
