Hi everyone! Twitter migrant, here for #mathsky and #chesspunks.
I'm an aspiring mathematician. Did my undergrad at Cambridge ('21-24), had a difficult time & barely graduated. Now I'm trying to accomplish the tall task of getting into grad school with my subpar grades, wish me luck!

My first paper just got brutally rejected by Reviewer 1. What a great start to my academic career!
(No hard feelings though, my second paper is much better and I'm just happy that I'm improving. I know that I'll make it one day, it's just a matter of time.)

I sometimes wonder how ultra-niche academic fields operate logistically. If the field is so small that every reasonable potential reviewer has a conflict of interest with you, who reviews the articles? Do they even bother anonymizing the peer review process in such a case?

I know I've been posting way too much #chess lately, but this game is too good not to post. 97% accuracy and a crazy sequence of 8 knight moves in a row to end the game, 2 of which are brilliant moves. One of my best bullet games ever.

Wtf? I've just been asked by a reputable journal to review an article. I haven't even started my master's yet, I've only published my first preprint less than 2 months ago, and somehow the journal editor thought I'd be a good referee. Is this normal in the field of mathematics?

Just received an informal offer for a MMath program. Feels so surreal. After over a year of bad news, my hard work is finally bearing fruit. All that awaits is an official offer letter and a visa application (which could still go south btw, fingers crossed) and my life update will be official!

What I appreciate the most about math research is that the only thing you need to care about is the math itself. No need to worry about not enough people responding to your survey, the risk of blowing up a lab, acquiring rare/expensive materials/equipment etc. Just math.

Having learned lots of theory about symmetric functions, it's crazy how Newton's identities and Vieta's formulae (stuff that we learned in high school) are still two of the most important results I'm using in my research despite their simplicity.
