Librarian Josh Westbrook, “Kids are living stories every day that we wouldn’t let them read.”

Radical Reads 2: Working with the Newest Edgy Titles for Teens, Bodart 2009.
…lenges: many of them are actually living them. Teens in tough situations will need particular help in their journey to adulthood. Books that reflect their world can be resources to help them work through their problems. But these are also the books that create the most controversy. Josh Westbrook, branch manager of the Prescott Library, Walla Walla County Rural Library District, Walla Walla, Washington, says it in one sentence: "Kids are living stories every day that we wouldn't let them read." Books can help those teens feel more understood and valued when they find characters and stories that truly speak to them, that can give them hope, an inspiration to move for-ward, to succeed, to transform their lives.
It's controversial because it's incredibly well written. Adolescence is a time when everything is black and white, when emotions are intense, whether displayed…

The Philippines just protected 200 square miles of ocean to safeguard “super reefs” that can withstand heat and bleaching. WHOI’s Anne Cohen says such protected areas not only save existing reefs, but also help new ones develop.

Can I just point out the incredible detail that Rom claps like a Bajoran? Never mind that the Bajorans are so well-developed they have their own unique form of applause, but to have a Ferengi character married to a Bajoran pick it up from her is so fuckin good. Put it straight in my veins.

The centerpiece was a massive moist candied chestnut cake, decorated with candied chestnuts and surrounded by trifles of various colors—bright red-current, green gooseberry, pale pink rose, and delicate woodland violet.

At least half of the children’s books I read are meh that missed their chance at excellence because they weren’t edited enough.

NEW: I wrote about Dallas City Hall. Designed by I.M. Pei, it's an incredible feat of architecture that was meant to embody progressivism and a new start after the JFK assassination. At the end of the month, city leaders could vote to tear it down: www.chron.com/culture/arti...
One of Texas' architectural masterpieces could soon face demolition

Another casualty that definitely isn't connected to the Bluesky CEO's ongoing meltdown.

Totally just a coincidence.
Excerpt from article:

Third update: The Follow Tracker labeller — the tool that showed who was following nine prominent racists, transphobes, and other figures popular with the US alt-right — is shutting down. Its operator insists this isn’t because of Bluesky’s CEO (and thus, presumably, not because the labeller identified her as following two well known anti-trans activists), but rather “because some of you can’t be trusted to use this information reasonably and responsibly,” which is a curious justification coming from an account literally named @for.shame.wtf.
