But to thank her for all the little things she did. Taking the time to chat and listen to someone that didn't have a clue. Giving me opportunities to be challenged. Helping me feel like I belonged. And giving me the tools to not only be someone else, but have the strength to be myself.

But I look at my college years, and of those folks that taught me as I was becoming an adult, Jewell was one of two professors that left an impression on me. One strong enough where I felt the need to pay my respects to her. To thank her not just for the lessons she taught me in class.

I had three teachers from high school who made an impression on me, and of them, I kept in touch with one. She passed away several years ago. The second one passed in 2017. The third one is still around as far as I know.

One comment that one of the folks made was that he could count on one finger the number of instructors he'd had in his educational career that he'd go to their funeral/memorial service. And that is was this professor.
It was a bit of a sobering comment, and it gave me thoughts.

Agreed. The last decade has done a toll on a number of us, and the quarantining of COVID really fucked up our ability to be social. We're still recovering from that and it makes the gatherings difficult at best.
Plus I don't have a place to host, lol.
