But, perhaps more importantly, we suggest that the inclusion of simple clumping factors in these 1D schemes is unlikely to capture the effect of the 3D structure on photosynthesis correctly. More on this coming out soon.

In a nutshell, the results suggest that land surface models, which tend to use 1D radiative transfer solutions for vegetation canopies, will tend to predict more photosynthesis per unit leaf area than models incorporating more realistic 3D structure.

Same plot as before but with the SSP CO2 concentration data. This doesn't feel quite so dramatic given that we are mostly under the curve, but obviously what's not great is the extent to which we have closed that gap in the last 3 years.

Every so often, over on the other site, I used to post a plot of CO2 concentration at Mauna Loa against the old RCP data. I haven't done that for probably 3 years, so thought I'd quickly re-run my scripts. Looks like we're slowly drifting away from 2.6 & 4.5. Will add SSP data when I get a moment.

University of Reading will have a lot funded PhD places in climate related areas over the next five years. Applications will open soon for some schemes. Watch the university website for details. Please pass on to anyone who might be interested.
