I'm not doing very well at being on all the platforms at once! But I will at least try to post my writing here. Latest column, on the loneliness of long term illness www.newstatesman.com/back-pages/2...
Long-term illness is not a battle to be “won” – it’s a weight to carry forever
You can’t truly share in pain, or suffering; you can’t share stays in hospital, or scans, or drug treatments.

I spin backwards in time, to my teenage years...I picture myself in the crowd at the Hemel Hempstead Pavilion, cigarette in hand, dancing to Ian Dury and the Blockheads, the Specials, or Buzzcocks. Or I’m in Victoria Park gazing at the Clash, and X-Ray Spex. www.newstatesman.com/back-pages/2...
A street rendition of “Wonderwall” sends me to seek sanctuary in a church
Inside London's Notre Dame de France, I find beautiful murals by Jean Cocteau.

"Unlike previous over-enthusiastic fans, these men were being entitled, rude and aggressive. Asking me for something and refusing to hear the word no, they seemed a hair’s breadth from anger." I wrote about modern fan encounters, and how nasty they can be. www.newstatesman.com/culture/life...
Has social media pushed fandom to a point of no return?
It used to be people would respect your personal space – now, it’s all a bit sinister.

"I want to speak up in defence of the minor talent. Most of us, after all, are minor talents. I include myself in that." I read the new book about Lawrence from Felt (Street Level Superstar) and wrote about how hardly anyone is a genius www.newstatesman.com/culture/2024...
We can’t all be geniuses
The word is overused. Most of us are minor talents.

"I listen to all these songs now and I think about the person I was when I wrote and recorded them...There is passion here, and a kind of romanticism, which is tempered by an awareness of the riskiness of being romantic. I can hear a complicated mix of self-revelation and self-preservation...

And what an extraordinary kind of unearned confidence it takes to write a lyric like “I’m old enough now to know there’s no such thing” at the age of 19."

"From time to time you can find me in a small club usually somewhere in east London, watching my son’s band playing a gig...I get a flicker of envy, however small the audience, however dingy the venue..nothing was ever quite as exciting as those beginnings" www.newstatesman.com/culture/life...
To the young, everything is fresh and new
And I must admit: I envy them for it.

It's all I know how to do really, in these kind of times. Carry on in spite. Make a world that's a sanctuary.

Spent the evening getting a few drinks inside me, standing in a small basement in Dalston, watching our lad's band do another gig. Music as our only salvation. On we go lovely people, singing in the dark times etc etc ❤️

In an attempt to wean myself off social media addiction in the last few days, I have taken up playing classical piano again, something I have not really done since my teens. Apologies to my neighbours for the bad, loud Beethoven. I am upset about the US election and this is my therapy.

"The year our twin daughters were born, we recorded Temperamental & there is no mention of babies at all. Instead I wrote about post-punk suburban violence, the decline of a pop career, & the urgency of living your life while there is still time." www.newstatesman.com/culture/musi...
Motherhood is full of agony, but its songs are deemed “nice”
I’d always shied away from writing sentimental songs about having babies for fear of seeming too soppy.
