Last read of 2024: Elle McNicoll’s Keedie. First read of 2025: Katya Balen’s The Space We’re In. Both fab, thought-provoking, empathy-inducing, moving MG #KidLit books. Both from the library. #GreatSchoolLibraries

I also keep trying not to think about how tiny my pension pot is…

Ditto! (And my eldest is 16)

🙋‍♀️ Ooh, ooh, I know that one!

That’s great to hear! We’ve got this book coming in our next order.

Shout out to former librarian Julia from Winchester for asking “Who will run our primary school libraries?” in this letter in The Guardian today. #SchoolLibraries #UKKidLit
A good old-fashioned clipping from the Guardian newspaper - from the letters page (text below):

Who will run our primary school libraries?
children and young people in
UK school and public libraries. I worked with four authorities over
Axel Scheffler, quoted in your article (Pledge for all primaries to have a library, 29 September), says: "A school library is more than just a room full of books ... It's a place where imaginations grow, confidence builds, and a lifelong love of reading takes root." This is, of course, true. And Rachel Reeves can be applauded for her pledge.
However, she makes no mention
of who will coordinate, run and refresh the items in this space. Will it be a newly labelled "teacher-librarian", already frazzled as a classroom teacher with little spare time? Or will each school employ a qualified librarian? Who will fund this? School library spaces can look sad and uninviting without regular care and attention.
I was once a librarian, supporting
17 years. Falso worked abroad.
I remember, long ago, when there was funding for school libraries, especially at secondary level. Now it is precarious. Good luck, Ms Reeves, but you need to ensure that these primary schools have the money to resource more than a basic stock of books.

Don’t forget the excellent CLPE (as I momentarily did) for literacy and #rfp support, folks.
darrenmatt.bsky.social
Agreed… and do check out the resources and support offered by CLPE - @theclpe.bsky.social - we have decades of experience, a beautiful library, a wonderful librarian, expert knowledge, hundreds of free resources, and CPD on RfP both in person and online… 😃

Yes!! The CLPE are excellent.

I’m often sceptical of prequels, but had to read SoTR- it did not disappoint! There’s plenty of action & suspense to hook teens, but it still has the political commentary & emotional depth of original trilogy. Collins writes with a lyricism & skill not expected in dystopian YA Recommended #UKKidLit
Photo of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games hardback book, “Sunrise on the Reaping”. Cover is dark purple & black, with a gold-looking pendant / amulet type thing in the centre, which has the heads of a snake and a bird.

An amazing friend set up a Library from scratch in her kids’ Primary as a parent volunteer! But she was a reader, worked in publishing, knew kids’ books & had budget & full support of an enthusiastic head. (She’s now retrained as an English teacher). But v few schools are lucky enough to have that
tracyshopkins.bsky.social
Yes, every small step is good. If they can free up a bit of curriculum / teacher time and offer more rfp support and training to teachers, enthusiastic reader teachers / TAs can do a great job in Primary libraries. (The @openuni-rfp.bsky.social do some great things).

Really?! Actual plans and events and funding that’s really going to make a difference? I hope so! I’m trying to be positive about the Libraries for Primaries plan too. The involvement of organisations like the NLT does make me more optimistic. Thanks, Louie!

Libraries are so cool. Whenever I'm away from home and need a place to hang out between things, I find a library. There's a bathroom, a water fountain, chairs, and I can read, meditate, use the computers, or just be, and no one tries me make me buy anything.

That’s good to hear! I’m looking forward to hearing more about the Year of Reading & I’m trying to quash the cynicism it’s been hard not to feel for the past few years.

Ah, yes! Next week in England. Thank you. (Though that’s very confusing, who decides these things?)
