DREAM ON just got its fourth starred review! I'm so delighted. We worked on this book for over four years and poured all of ourselves into it. It's extremely gratifying that it's getting such kind notice.

LOL my mom set them up at her nail salon!!! Absolutely bonkers Vietnamese mother energy!!!
My books, The Magic Fish and Angelica the Bear Prince, are set up on a marble countertop under a sign that my mother made and printed with clip art! It says, “Need a Gift Idea? Perfect for any occasion.”

that is the sweetest thing💜

that is amazing. I remember many times with my own littles when we'd go to a park to wait for a summer concert or animal show, etc., I'd always bring books to read to them and end up with a bunch of strange children too like I was Mother Goose

Shout-out to @shannonhale.bsky.social, who has recently become a staple for our 4yo in his FAVORITE new tradition. Each Friday so far this fall, I pick him up from preschool, we hit up the playground, then we go to the library to get 2-3 Princess in Black books and read them on the library lawn.

Yesterday after working 10 hours straight on a book, I had a heavy feeling. Sometimes it helps to say aloud what I think the feeling is telling me, so I walked into the family room and declared, "I think maybe my book is trash and so am I and I'm not worthy of love." Yep, it helped. 😂

Laurie Halse Anderson is a national treasure. Books save lives, and it fills me with wonder and love to think of the lives she and her books have helped save. That her books are banned from schools statewide in Utah is a heartbreaking tragedy.

Many thanks to the University of Utah for inviting me to talk about banned books yesterday! The audience was huge and enthusiastic, ranging from students to professors, a spirited group of retired librarians and the wonderful @shannonhale.bsky.social!

beautifully put. I find it all interesting to think about and yet impossible to explain. The nature of working in something so abstract I suppose.

And maybe that’s part of the point of literature? It’s a vehicle for curiosity. And hopefully, it’s also entertaining. And maybe…if we’re lucky…maybe sometimes it’s even funny. But ultimately, it's a process vs product kind of art, right? The point is the experience of reading, not the outcome. 3/

We are experts in something that no one can be an expert in. What exactly is my expertise? Nothing. I have none. Sure, fiction is a potentially compassionate entry into wrestling with thoughts, stories, and ideas, really all the things that make us human. But it's a wrestle without the answer. 2/

Thinking today about what it means to be a novelist. We write about people, but we’re not psychologists. We write about ideas, but we’re not philosophers. We write about meaning, but we’re not mystics. We use words as our tools but we’re not linguists. 1/

one of the things strangers say to me most often is "I've got a book idea for you" or "is that your next book idea" etc. and the urge to scream "IDEAS ARE CHEAP!" is so strong and I never say it because I want to live in a society where people are generally courteous etc. etc.

I tell people that the problem is not coming up with ideas, I think of a couple dozen of them a day. The real problem is knowing which of the damn things is any good for writing up. Most of them are junk. I have to let them roll around in my brain a while to find out which is which.

Do you have a clever/pithy/useful answer when people ask where you get your ideas? If so, can I steal it?

It seems like Christmas comes earlier and earlier every year, doesn't it? But we're very excited to expand that December magic into our September. Today you can start bringing some glittery holiday joy into your lives by picking up HOLLY JOLLY KITTY-CORN at your local bookstore.
The cover of Holly Jolly Kitty-Corn by Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham. Unicorn and Kitty wear Santa hats with stars atop their horns and are signing carols while snowflakes fall.

Libraries: worth more than their cost in social benefits.
shannonhale.bsky.social
Libraries are so cool. Whenever I'm away from home and need a place to hang out between things, I find a library. There's a bathroom, a water fountain, chairs, and I can read, meditate, use the computers, or just be, and no one tries me make me buy anything.

Great thread for teachers re:"A.i"

A few strategies I use:
1. Talk with students about how: 1) AI tends to produce work that is at best mediocre and at worst just wrong, 2) using AI habitually weakens the critical thinking skills that make college valuable, and 3) AI exploits environmental resources and content creators.
