A great example of #CarCulture.

We should all stay alert to each other while traveling. But: What kind of system would desensitize us to choosing “1000lb rolling death machine[s]” as our default travel option? How’d we come to expect more vulnerable ppl to accommodate us or else? #transportation

Show me a driver begging people walking/biking to wear hazmat-level hi-viz clothing and enough LEDs to light a stadium, and I’ll show you someone who does 30mph in a school zone

When the drivers won’t stop for you even tho you’re so cute and small and there is no mid(very long)block crosswalk or speed bumps???? #WeekWithoutDriving

#WeekWithoutDriving off to a wet but fun start with a trip to/from the vet for vaccines! (If we do enough rainy rides maybe she’ll even let me put her rain hat and goggles on.) Finding bike parking was a bit tough but sticking 95% of the time to quiet local streets w lots of speed bumps was great!

Reminded of a line in an unpub’d draft 2014 NIOSH report I read looking into why co’s didn’t submit wildfire respirator designs for approval: “Until a large portion of the wildland #firefighting community commits to purchasing, …demand is not great enough to justify production &liability costs.” 👀

What’s esp helpful about these maps is they not only show where to go but also how long it will take to evac based on where you start. The time estimates are based on a conservative walking pace: Ppl may not be able to move quickly for various reasons, & may require assistance to walk/bike/roll. 3/n

Even w/o an earthquake, you’ll likely traffic & crashes what with everyone & their mother driving at once.

Walking & biking are often more flexible ways to travel in an emergency.

Here in WA, the state developed tsunami evac maps for ppl walk-evacuating many coastal cities. 2/n

“Mass deformation” is somehow both the most euphemistic AND most graphic way to describe severely injuring or k*lling others or yourself while driving. Either way, I hope the phrase comes to mind as you consider a mph increase in speed while driving, or as a passenger in a speed demon’s car.
July 26, 2025 at 12:25 AM
Or more usefully: “above 15 mph, relatively small changes in vehicle speed lead to large increases in risk of death.…risk for a ped is 10% w impact speed of 23mph but rises to 25% at 32mph. The limit is 30 or 35mph in many cities.” fivethirtyeight.com/features/why... highways.dot.gov/safety/speed...

The relationship between speed&safety is exponential… kinda like sword-swallowing, if your organs are ‘ppl walk/biking nearby.’

You’re liable to do exp. more damage to your organs for every cm off-path your sword is.
8mph over limit is actually a huge deal. We just kind of accept risk to others 🤷‍♀️.

Awful. Ridden this tons. So many families & kids here (next to a high school, near lightrail, lots of bike/walk commute activity). Low posted speed, bike lanes in both directions; one side largely separated from car traffic by a parking lane. On the other, flexposts & paint w bulbouts.
