"pending" has, in the past, been a good indicator that you're in the pipeline. obviously past performance is no longer a guarantee of future results, but hang in there.

One lesson that has become crystal clear over the last few years is how difficult, maybe impossible, it is to have meaningful discourse when both sides are the bad guy. Maybe it's always been this way.

In my experience, huge increase in knowledge from yr 3 to 4 to 5, especially from PhD students coming straight from undergrad. Lots of conflating issues in the US like yr 1 rotations, requiring a pub, and PIs hanging on to trainees for too long, but 3 years postbac does not seem like enough to me.
