Personal news: Today is my last day with @militarydotcom.bsky.social. Four years ago, @zachfb.bsky.social and @travistritten.bsky.social took a chance on a guy far outside DC to be the Air/Space Force Reporter and brought me on to join an incredible team of journalists. Best choice I ever made.

It’s time to forge ahead. I’m wishing the best for all my former colleagues at Military.com. You guys rock.

I’ve had a front-row seat to this changing world. Journalism is a tough profession, especially now. The industry has been run into the ground, reporters have been vilified by the public. But it’s worth it. What we do as journalists matters.

I was a minor celebrity for a few days after exposing Brian Williams’ tall tales. I walked the halls of the Pentagon and asked tough questions at press briefings. I saw the Department of Defense become the Department of War.

I’ve gotten to cover corruption in the Florida Keys and walked with U.S. troops in Iraq. I uncovered a murder plot in the Philippines that led to the arrest of the killer. I hounded John McCain on Capitol Hill.

I’m not sure where I’ll go from here. This is the first time in my career that I’ve been unemployed. My greatest hope is to continue doing journalism and working with reporters. I got my first full-time reporter job right after Sept. 11, 2001. I’ve been blessed to have worked ever since.

It was a pleasure working with each and every one, and a great stroke of luck to get them all together in one newsroom.

We had the best team of reporters in the business – Tom Novelly, Konstantin Toropin, Rebecca Kheel, Steve Beynon, Patricia Kime, Drew Lawrence, Rich Sisk. I’m indebted to them for all their dogged reporting.

And most of all, I was lucky to be surrounded by good people who really cared about each other. Thanks so much to Zach Fryer-Biggs for hiring me and believing I could be a good editor. Katy O’Hara was an amazing copy editor and saved me many times – couldn’t have done it without her.

In our own small way, I like to think we made the world a little better – more transparent, more fair.
travistritten.bsky.social
All were talented journalists who believed deeply in what we were doing. We tried our best every day to be a voice for the service members. We held powerful people to account. We brought problems to light so they could, hopefully, be fixed.
travistritten.bsky.social
Today I resigned from Military.com. It was incredibly hard to leave the newsroom I helped build over the past four years and loved so much. We did work that I’m incredibly proud of, but one of the best parts of our incredible run was going to work every day with our team. Thank you!

A source tells me in a tense meeting this morning, Pentagon officials briefed Senate national security and leadership staff on last week’s U.S. strike on a Venezuelan boat. However, they provided little answers, and legal justification for the strike...

The important question now is are we renaming DVIDS to WVIDS?

Hmm, it was down but now working on my end. Full rebrand on banner: U.S. Department of War.

A high-ranking Pentagon official told The Intercept Trump's strike on a boat in the Caribbean was a criminal attack on civilians. Two government officials said Pete Hegseth's rationale for the attack came together after the fact.
Pentagon Official: Trump Boat Strike Was a Criminal Attack on Civilians
A current DoD official and many military legal experts say the U.S. attack on a boat in the Caribbean near Venezuela broke international law.

IRS has been requiring IDme checks for FOIA requests, which may* be an appropriate check for a privacy request to disclose your personal data, but is an inappropriate check for a public record.

Here, DHS has made similar requests for public records.

This pattern is very concerning!

There are 3,300 fewer newspapers across the U.S. and 45,000 fewer journalists than there were in 2005, which means more secrecy across the country, according to a new study from @brechnerfoi.bsky.social.

You filed a FOIA, then the agency wrongly demanded ID. What now?
Plus: more updates from FPF’s FOIA trenches, and how news deserts enable government secrecy.
