The findings demonstrate that the impact of net-zero aligned afforestation on BVOC emissions can be minimised through careful selection of tree species, which could help to avoid unintended consequences of afforestation on air quality.
treeswithhazel.bsky.social
This study focusses on tree species that make up the majority of existing UK woodland or are expected to play a key role in UK forests in the future and examines afforestation in a warmer climate with higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
treeswithhazel.bsky.social
In our greatest emission scenario we see an increase in emissions of BVOCs by up to 123% by 2050. However, in some of our experiments we observe a reduction in BVOCs by as much as 3%.
treeswithhazel.bsky.social
We model the emission of biogenic emissions from five afforestation experiments, based on an achievement of 19% average woodland cover in the UK by 2050, in a future warmer and drier climate. Woodland cover is currently around 13%.

Awww! It was fantastic to hear your story and thoughts on science comms Sarah. Very inspiring for new/early communicators!

Thanks to @canopyrobin.com for encouraging me along (and inspiring me) and to the public engagement team at Leeds for my fellowship support

I loved this from Katherine Mathieson “We are the people holding the torch for awe, wonder and joy”. #sciencecommunicators

I’ve had a blast at my first @big-stem-network.bsky.social meeting at the RI. Learning from a host of amazing people who dedicate their life to sharing the joy of science and make it as accessible as possible. From games and demos, to science TV shows and animal displays. #sciencecomms #naturecomms

Final day of #EGU25 tomorrow! I’ve really enjoyed my first EGU - hearing lots of #atmosphericscience and #biogeoscience talks (and giving my own!), as well as science to policy and science communication workshops too! Plus the #urbantrees in Vienna are great 🌳

I’m at #EGU25. Come along to my talk on Wednesday in Biogeosciences session BG3.2 land use and land cover change to hear about afforestation in the UK and future emissions of BVOCs 🌳

Oooh thank you for the info! It is indeed quite shaded where i found it. I've never seen it so green before. Thanks

Tree friends 🌳 Near us is a bank of #LondonPlane trees, surrounded by what is essentially a ball pit of their leaves which seem to always be there(!). It makes me so happy. But today on my walk through those leaves, I noticed this zesty green #Lichen! Anybody know what type of lichen it is?

More tree guard replacement today with the Biosphere Atmosphere Group at #GairWood!
A small group of people in a field, replacing small white plastic guards with tall green guards

Aww thanks Robin, tree talk extraordinaire! <3

I love talking to people about trees and science! In fact, I recently became a Public Engagement Fellow at the @universityofleeds.bsky.social to learn more about how to do this best and learn from the public, as we try to bring positive impact from our science. (2/4)

Hello Bluesky! I've finally joined. Hopefully I can find the excellent tree community I once enjoyed on that other platform(!). I am a PhD researcher at the University of Leeds, investigating the interactions between trees and the atmosphere (1/4)
